The Eastern Busway continues to expand with construction underway that will mean rapid buses between Botany, Pakūranga and the rail network at Panmure. As we get closer to the finish line on the new Tī Rākau Bridge, it’s a great moment to share a few fun facts about what’s gone into building it: 🚴 Tī Rākau Bridge is a new bridge over Pakūranga Creek built for the busway and a two-way cycleway – it enables buses to bypass the existing Tī Rākau Drive Bridge. 🏗️ Four cranes were used throughout construction - a 300-tonne, 250-tonne, 80-tonne and 55-tonne crawler crane. 🚧 Around 2,300m³ of concrete has been poured. 🛠 Total bridge length: 180 metres. 🪨 Its piled foundations extend 20 metres down into the rock beneath Pakūranga Creek. ⬆️ A critical Super T beam was lifted into place using a tandem lift between a 300-tonne crawler crane on the bridge staging and a 230-tonne mobile crane positioned behind the abutment. 📅 Construction duration: 13 months (with about one month to go)! 🚲 Remaining work includes barriers, cycle rail installation, deck joints, asphalting and final finishing touches. 🚌 Once complete, the bridge will carry buses, pedestrians, and cyclists. It’s been a huge team effort to bring this structure to life — and we’re nearly there!

We know building major projects like the Eastern Busway impact the community, so we work hard to minimise those impacts. One way we do that is by building the busway in stages while keeping two lanes of traffic open in both directions throughout the build. Recently a key milestone was reached - 1.5km of busway lanes were completed in the middle of Tī Rākau Drive, as well as 1.5km of westbound lanes on Tī Rākau Drive between Mattson Road and Gossamer Drive. This meant we could ‘switch’ into the third staging configuration, and over the course of a weekend, we moved vehicles to the centre of the road. In effect, cars now travel on the future busway, while major underground utility upgrades such as laying 850m of larger higher-capacity stormwater pipes and road rebuild work can be completed on the eastbound side of Tī Rākau Drive. This staging will be the set up for the remainder of the year. Following testing, commissioning, and operational readiness, the Eastern Busway will open in 2027 providing greater travel choice for East Auckland so people can have easier access to jobs, education, essential services, friends and family 🚌 🚗 🚆 🚲

🎈 What does a balloon pop tell us about our new City Rail Link station🎈 A lot - the echo from that burst helps us measure how clearly you'll be able to hear passenger announcements, when we open in the second half of this year. It's called a "reverberation test" and it measures how sound behaves in enclosed spaces. 🚈The new CRL stations are big, and some have really high ceilings or long concourses with mixed materials on the walls and floor that have been specifically chosen to absorb and reduce echo. Now imagine those spaces filled with the sounds of hundreds of footsteps and voices, trains arriving, departing and breaking. 🔊We need to find a 'base level' so we can make sure we even out all of that background noise. Our teams are measuring just how long the sound bounces around for after the balloon is popped, because how clearly you can hear ..."The next train arriving on platform 2 is" ... all depends on how much reverberation there is. Getting the base level right is also important for supporting clear and reliable emergency communications, particularly for all travelers with hearing impairments. 👂We do have hearing loops available in stations -that's assistive listening technology which delivers sound straight into a hearing aid without background noise or interference - but we can't assume all people with impairments have hearing aids. These tests are all about making sure the City Rail Link provides a comfortable and reliable passenger experience for people of all abilities, as we progress towards opening . Keen to know more about what else we need to test before the City Rail Link gets the green light? Head to at.govt.nz/crl to look at our checklist.

After their exciting train trips on the City Rail Link in 2025, Sandra, Sandy and Sandeep are back and mixing their go. In February, the 15kg sandbags are being reused for loaded sea trials on Auckland’s new hybrid electric and full electric ferries. By simulating different passenger loads, we’re checking performance and onboard systems before the ferries take human passengers. The 200‑passenger electric ferry and 300‑passenger hybrid electric ferry are another step toward a quieter, lower emission ferry network for Tāmaki Makaurau. The coming months will see lots of further testing, training and approvals, but we’re looking forward to welcoming our first passengers soon⚡🛥️

With more people moving around our city, the transport network is getting busier, so here are a few tips to help you get around smoothly: 🔹 Use the AT Mobile app to check live departures, track your bus in real-time, and opt-in for for real-time alerts so you're up to date on detours, delays and cancellations on your regular routes 🔹Top up your HOP card before you ride. We also accept contactless payments with debit and credit cards, smartphones and smartwatches 🔹If your bus or train starts to fill up, please move down the aisle or carriage so others can board safely 🔹If you're driving, you can check travel times on apps like Google Maps or Apple Maps to help plan your journey. If you're travelling with others, make the most of T2 and T3 lanes 🚗 If you're interested in what goes into managing the busiest time of year on our transport network, our GM of Public Transport Operations, Rachel Cara, breaks it all down in the article below 👇
Rachel Cara 1 нед.
We’re now coming into the busiest time of year on our transport network 🚌 🚈 ⛴️ 🚗 This time last year we saw a 15% increase in daily boardings compared to the annual rolling average - that’s a lot more people out and about! We’ve made some improvements to our bus network since then, and there’s plenty happening behind the scenes to prepare for what’s ahead. If you’re curious about what goes into managing this busy time of year, I’ve shared a deeper look below.

K’Road has always been a place people travelled to and through. The ridgeline was once a crucial pathway for people on foot between Manukau and Waitematā Harbours, well before electric trams made the area a destination for those wanting easy access to the areas vibrant shops. This year the opening of the City Rail Link will see it return as a key transport corridor, and we've been busy preparing for the influx. From the brand new Karanga-a-Hape Station you'll be able to catch a ❤️South City Line and 💚East West line train on the new CRL network. This means whether you’re coming from Pukekohe, Papatoetoe, Glen Innes or Glen Eden - K’ Road is an easy train ride away with trains running every few minutes at peak times. It will also intersect with some of the city’s most popular bus routes, including the WX1 and future Northwest Busway services. Auckland Transport supported by Auckland Council and NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi have completed a series of upgrades designed to make the neighbourhood more accessible, and easier to navigate - whether you’re arriving by train, bus, bike, or on foot. 🚶♀️🚴♂️🚌🚊 There are new pedestrian-friendly spaces, cycle lanes, bus stops, seating, and artwork - all adding to the vibrancy K'Road is well-known for. 🌿🎉 If you haven't visited in a while, it's well worth a look. Get in now, before the crowds arrive! Yes, the improvements will make a big difference, and yes, it looks amazing, but what I'm most proud of is how Auckland Transport listened and responded to the needs of the community. We didn't shy away from the challenges of trying to balance the needs of people who live, work, and visit the area. Instead, by engaging meaningfully with locals and businesses, we've got some really great outcomes for everyone. Preparing our station neighbourhoods for the changes the CRL will bring is just one small part of a very big puzzle. You can see what else we have to do to before we can open the City Rail Link and launch our new network on our project page at at.govt.nz/crl Special thanks to Suresh Patel Manoj Nathoo and Shaun Sutton.

Meet the team getting ready to guide you through the CRL When you’re in a station and unsure which train to catch or which exit to take, who do you look for? Our Customer Service staff. This week marked a pretty exciting step forward as the first group of more than 70 Customer Service team members stepped into our new City Rail Link stations to begin familiarising themselves with their future workplaces. You can see some of the team leaders pictured above about to enter Te Waihorotiu Station near the Sky Tower, which will be served by the East West Line and the South City Line. The station is 15m deep and 300m long and is expected to be the country's busiest train station, so getting to know every inch of it is a big job. Over the next few months, our rail operator Auckland One Rail will be running a big training programme to get every staff member up to speed. Teams will be: 🚶♂️ Checking walk times 🔌 Identifying key switches and equipment locations 🗺️ Confirming maps and signage 🧭 Making sure all public‑facing information is accurate and easy to follow Once they know the stations inside and out, they'll put that knowledge to the test during trial operations beginning in April, simulating normal daily operations and end‑of‑day checks. They'll also stress‑test the stations by responding to different scenarios, such as maintenance issues, to ensure all systems are working together as they should. 🧐And if you're wondering why they are wearing forensic-style booties over their shoes ... it's because we are protecting our beautiful terrazzo tile flooring, making sure it stays in tip-top shape while work takes place inside the stations. Preparing our staff is a critical part of making sure your journey through the CRL is smooth when the City Rail Link opens in the second half of this year. Things are about to ramp up in Tāmaki Makaurau, with the busiest months on our transport network just around the corner. Schools are back, universities are getting underway again, so there’ll be more people than usual travelling around our city, especially during peak hours. The increased traffic will mean both public transport and the roads will feel busier. Our teams at the Auckland Transport Operations Centre will be doing their thing to keep the city moving, but you may notice extra congestion out there. Might even be a good time to give those T2/T3 lanes a whirl if you can find some company! A few tips to help you get around smoothly: ✳️ Check Journey Planner for real-time bus and train capacity ✳️ Opt in to real-time alerts in the AT Mobile app so you know what’s happening on your regular routes ✳️ If your bus or train is filling up, please move down the aisle or carriage and pop your bag on the floor so everyone can fit ✳️ If you’re travelling on one of our frequent bus routes (handy tip: these have only two digits or a name e.g. CityLink), they run at least every 15 minutes from 7am-7pm, seven days a week. If your bus is full, another one will be along shortly. If you are a parent of a school student, a timely reminder to help our youth with communicating: ➡️ Please remind them to tag on and off every school bus trip, this helps us plan for school bus timetables and bus sizes ➡️ If school buses aren’t an option, students can use urban buses, but they’ll be busier than usual. Aim to arrive early in case there are queues. ➡️ Kids aged 5 -15 can get a child concession for 40% off bus, train and most ferry trips with their registered HOP card. Thanks for your patience as we head into this busy season. Auckland Transport

More efficient transport choices guaranteed for Aucklanders living in and around Botany, with funding secured for the final stretch of the Eastern Busway. Construction on the final bus link through Guys Reserve Whakamaumahara starts in March. Thanks to significant cost savings and funding from NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi and Auckland Council. This final section will provide a dedicated corridor for buses eliminating delays from buses entering general traffic from Tī Rākau Drive to Botany Town Centre. Work in the reserve includes a 600-metre walking and cycling path and improvements to the local stormwater pond to support native plant growth. The Eastern Busway opens in 2027, and by 2028, it's expected to carry 18,000 passengers per day with projections rising to 24,000 passengers per day by 2048.
