chrismeardon C Hi Guys, anyone know where the light sensor for the auto headlights are? Mine seem to be on most of the day which in broad daylight cant be right. im guessing there is something covering the sensor or it is very sensitive! My did play up yesterday, entered tunnel, lights came, after exiting tunnel, lights never gone off. Got home, cleaned windscreen rain sensor area, and it works fine now. #4 · Sep 29, 2011 I have experienced these and many other issues with Auto Lights. Stole this from MK5GTI Forum:- from what i remember reading the auto lights should have the functions - auto on when unlocking in low light - follow you home when locking the car in low light - auto on for a period of time spend over 90mph but will switch off when you stay under 10mph (not sure but i think its 10mph) for 5 minutes - auto on in dazzle conditions, ie bright sunlight - auto on in low light this is with the switch into the auto postition btw they should also auto level from ignition with a minimum of 2 movements Is your windshield clean? the sensor lives on the reverse of your rear view mirror facing out behind the glass, as you look into your car from the front its the dark square patch in the middle at the top. Hope this helps [Y] #5 · Sep 29, 2011 the sensor is above the rear view mirror against the glass. as far as I can tell its just a poorly designed system, mine tend to stay on 90% of the time, bright sunny days seem to really confuse it [:(] I asked dealer if they could adjust but only got blank looks. I did read that the sensitivity can be adjusted with vagcom, not sure how much this would improve though. #6 · Sep 29, 2011

Can confirm ALL of the points are true. One question about the auto level, is that where it will level the headlights automatically based on rear load (statically)? As for some of the above comments RE lights being on in the daytime, If you look at other cars in hazy bright sunlight (say a slightly foggy morning) they are remarkably hard to see and the headlights do make a difference. they will turn on almost instantly when entering a tunnel but there is a like 5-10 second delay between exiting the tunnel and the lights turning off. the ONLY irritating thing about the auto lights is how sometimes it can be a bit dumb, as in switching the lights on and off every 5 minutes because of shadows or overhanging trees. but overall i wouldn't be without them!! #8 · Oct 1, 2011 I think the Auto Lights feature works well but you do have to ensure the sensor is clean. If you have a dirty screen or your windscreen wipers leave streaks, this can affect the sensor's performance. Also, I did experience a change in the sensor's sensitivity when I had my car's windscreen replaced (http://www.stuartdalby.co.uk/vwgolfmk5/vwgolfmk5_wearandtear.php#windscreenreplacement). I read that the sensor's sensitivity could be changed using VCDS and this was one of the main reasons for me buying it. Once I had VCDS, I managed to change the sensitivity slightly and now they work as good as ever. I didn't think Auto Lights came with Auto Leveling though. I wonder if the original poster is referring to Bi-Xenon headlights which I believe do have auto levelling but not standard halogen headlights. Stuart http://www.stuartdalby.co.uk/vwgolfmk5 #9 · Oct 1, 2011 Stuart, I find your site really informative. I stumbled on it ages ago lol. Would you be so kind as to tell me what areas of VAGCOM you need to change in order to lower the sensitivity slightly? It'd need to be clear enough to give instructions to someone else as I don't have VAGCOM but I know someone who does [:)] #10 · Oct 2, 2011 Glad to hear you found my web site useful. The settings for the rain/light sensor are hidden away a bit. You need to access Control Module: 09 - Central Electronics and then Subsystem: RegenLichtSens (Rain/Light Sensor in German) To change the sensor's sensitivity you have to change its coding. I don't think I can describe it any clearer than Ross Tech themselves at http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/VW_Golf_(1K)_Rain/Light_Sensor#Coding. I found that increasing the Light Sensor Correction increased the sensor's sensitivity. For example, on my car the Light Sensor Correction Value was set to 20% but the lights weren't coming on as early as I wanted. So I increased the correction value to 40% and then the sensor was more sensitive and the headlights switched on sooner. Finally, you have to convert a few numbers between decimal to Hex. The Calculator on a windows PC can do this for you. Hope that helps, Stuart http://www.stuartdalby.co.uk/vwgolfmk5 #11 · Apr 29, 2013
- auto on in dazzle conditions, ie bright sunlight
thanks for the info, I thought they were faulty. Big drawback with this is that i was approaching a junction at 30mph when someone pulled right across the front of me. After wondering WTF he was doing i realised that my lights had come on just at the wrong time and he assumed i flashed him to pull across me. very dangerous!!!! #12 · Apr 29, 2013 Can confirm that auto-lights will come on in bright direct sunlight i.e. low morning or evening sun, also definitely they aren't connected to any kind of auto levelling. #13 · May 1, 2013 I think it can be a good idea at times, you do get some looks from baffled people though lol Insert Quotes Post Reply
