drive.google.com #1 · Aug 18, 2021 My '99 V70R engine bay, by the serpentine belt, all of a sudden sounds like a lawnmower. To no avail I felt around to see if there was a vibration causing it. I also removed the belt; the pulleys appear to smoothly rotate. While running, the power steering pump pulley appears to have a slight wobble. Noise is the same at idle or driving, with AC on or off, and I also hear it while in the car. Any ideas? IMG_0548.MOV

Should there be zero play? Show more replies 0 Reply #4 · Aug 18, 2021 No, it shouldn't "wobble". #6 · Aug 18, 2021 ScottishBrick said: Yes it should be tight Click to expand...Thanks, ordering a new tensioner and belt now. 0 Reply #7 · Aug 19, 2021 That aggressive of a sound should be pretty evident if your at the culprit. Very strange sound but it doesnt resemble a bearing in a pulley IMO. Power steering works ok? I have seen the pulley shaft internally break and make some wierd noises. If you run it without the belt on, is noise still present? I have also seen alternator pulley bearing fail and make some funky noises also. Spin alternator by hand in both directions slow and fast. Also feel for any play or movement in all directions. #8 · Aug 19, 2021 Power steering works fine and alternator pulley appears ok. I have pretty much all service records since the car was new and didn't see info on tensioner ever replaced while the belt was replaced back in 2010. Figured I'd do some preventive maintenance with these two parts and see where it leads me. 1 Reply #9 · Aug 19, 2021 i totally understand that. But that noise as aggressive as it is should be fairly obvious. I appologize for the questions but being a tech who is what i would consider blessed that i do this work for a living (saying that because if i didnt i do not know for sure i could afford to drive a vehicle due to cost of parts and service) i dont just change parts. I search for a root cause and what led up to that point. Example is a noise, what causes the noise and then i say what made that piece that caused the noise cause the noise. Again i appologize but these cars arent cheap to maintain. factory tensioner 50-100 bucks just for the part. Be sure thats what is wrong. Thats all im saying. Dont want to see someone spend money on something that wont fix the problem thats my main point #10 · Aug 19, 2021 I've heard this before and it sounds like the ALT to me. When their bearings go bad the rotor starts tagging the stator. Of course the thing to do is use a stethoscope to isolate the component. If you don't have one of those, a long skinny screwdriver or steel rod held up to touch your ear and to the part in question will do in a pinch. Listen to each part in turn trying to discern the worst one. Once the tool is firmly and safely in place I find closing my eyes helps. #12 · Aug 19, 2021 That would've been a second pick, as I've had one that sounded like it was full of marbles when running. That tensioner pulley needs to be replaced as well, seeing as it was "wobbly". #13 · Aug 23, 2021 Replaced alternator, tensioner pulley and serpentine belt. No more noise. Insert Quotes Post Reply
