Bain & Company Tops Glassdoor Best Place To Work List Once Again

Bain & Company has once again topped employer review site Glassdoor’s best employer ranking for 2019 – the fourth time the firm has achieved the feat.

Global strategy and management firm Bain & Company has featured in the number one spot on employer review platform Glassdoor’s Best Places to Work list for 2019 – moving up one spot from last year’s second placing and edging further ahead of BCG in fifth. It’s the 11th consecutive year Bain has made the Employees’ Choice Awards list – a ‘downright exceptional’ accomplishment in the words of Glassdoor.

Bain’s fourth number one ranking is also the highest number of times has appeared in top spot – following on from 2012, 2014, 2017 – pulling ahead of three-time champion Facebook. Following an annus horribilis marked by worldwide scandals and ever-greater exposure from the media, public and government regulators, Facebook was the big loser this year, dropping from first down to seventh in course of just twelve months.

In addition to ranking first on four occasions, Bain has also secured a second or third spot five times – by far the most consistent of any firm across sectors since the ranking’s inception in 2009, while prestigious consulting competitor McKinsey & Company finished in second ahead of Bain in 2013 but has since slipped down to 19th. BCG meanwhile, the last of the MBB trio, has been a steady presence inside the top seven over the past five years.

“It feels fantastic for all of us at Bain & Company to win this top spot,” said the firm’s Philippines-raised Worldwide Managing Partner Manny Maceda, who took the helm last year. “This year our leadership has invested in more frequent communication to share our vision and strategic ambitions for our firm, including a reaffirmation of our company mission. The level of transparency and engagement from firm leadership translates directly to employee enthusiasm and excitement about our business outlook and firm journey.”

While strictly the list relates to the firm in the US, with Glassdoor yet to extend their rankings to Asia, Bain in a press release cited a review from one employee at the firm’s Kuala Lumpur office: “I cannot think of a better place to start your career. You will develop exceptional hard skills (strategic insight, analytic prowess) and soft skills (compelling communications, inspirational leadership, stakeholder management), see a wide range of organisations and business problems, and get the best coaching you can imagine to become a well-rounded business leader.”

Reviews from Singapore on Glassdoor – where the firm holds a four and a half star rating – are even more glowing, notably as to the firm’s great culture, accelerated learning environment and professional development opportunities, and honest, open and collaborative approach. “Bain is dedicated to the professional development and training of each individual, with significant time/money investment in this area,” said one local senior associate.

One man often credited with driving the firm’s cultural success, with Bain claiming the lowest attrition rates in the industry, is heralded HR guru Russ Hagey, Bain’s Worldwide Chief Talent Officer who has been with the firm for almost 40 years – Bain being his only ever employer. “We see investing in our employees as investing in the future leaders of the firm,” Hagey said of the latest Glassdoor accolade.
