The new G-Wagen lineup is about to get much more exciting, with Mercedes’ AMG division preparing the 2022 G-Class 4×4².

In development since last year, it will succeed the G550 4×4², which was known as the G500 4×4² in global markets, and was recently caught lapping the Nurburgring, subsequent to the cold weather-testing phase of the past few months.

The model, whose official name is still unknown, though it’s believed to be sold under the AMG brand, won’t fully reveal its design just yet, but the highlights are obvious: huge fenders, big side steps, mandatory steel bumper protection at the back due to the elevated ground clearance, roof rack accessible via the rear ladder, and a few other touches. These will be complemented by different upholstery and trim, and perhaps other interior upgrades.

Mercedes’ all-new AMG G-Class 4×4² will arrive with portal axles, long-travel suspension, off-road tires and a light bar mounted on the roof. We still don’t know anything official about the engine yet, but it will likely use a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 like the one found in the latest G63. In that model, it produces 577 HP (585 PS / 430 kW) and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque, for a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) of 4.5 seconds and a 149 mph (240 km/h) top speed with the optional AMG Driver’s Package.

The 2022 G-Class 4×4² is expected to break cover before the end of the year.
