In the late 1970s a move over from wooden cabinets to aluminium-moulded loudspeaker cabinets was made. Within this selection of new speakers were fitted relatively small 100mm woofers and tweeters of 25mm.

As with the rest of the loudspeaker range these small loudspeakers were based upon the pressure chambre principle and could be placed almost anywhere within a room: wall, shelving system, table or book shelf. They were light, took up little space and very very transportable.

The new range of speakers were developed for use with the Beocenter 7700 and Beomaster 6000 when, because of their compactness and ease of portability, they were quickly and easily positioned in rooms around the house where music could be heard away from the main system.

The range of compact speakers was one of Jacob Jensen’s design triumphs and were produced right through the 1990s.

These three earlier ‘C’ type speakers: the Beovox C30, C40 and C75 were developed and manufactured at the start of their long life. The largest - the C75 was specifically designed so that it stood no taller than an LP record. It was only 31cm tall but was able to provide just as much sound from its compact cabinet as compared with other larger speakers in the Bang & Olufsen range. The ‘75′ signified the power at which it was rated, namely 75 watts. Two woofers at 10cm were positioned at either end of its three sections; the middle compartment was occupied by a smaller tweeter. The additional woofer made quite a difference when compared to its smaller siblings who were fitted with just the one.

The C75 and its smaller brother, the C40, was manufactured to benefit from advantages of the ‘log line transmission system’ and thus exploit the acoustic properties of small rooms to give well-balanced and quality sound reproduction from their relatively small casings.

Beovox C75 was subsequently superceded by the very popular Beovox CX100 in 1984.

As well as the larger C75 there were two other, smaller compact speakers within the group. The Beovox C30 could handle up to 30W RMS (40 W music power) and was fitted with a 10cm woofer and 2,5cm tweeter. The Beovox C40 was fitted with similar features but could handle up to 40W RMS (50W music power). The C40 was superceded by the Beovox CX50 in 1984.

This range of popular Beovox ‘C’ speakers won the prestigious ID Award in 1978.
