Hero Splendor:

Best Commuter Bikes In India Up To 110cc

While the Splendor’s predecessor, the CD100, kickstarted this segment in the 80s and mobilised the nation, it was the Splendor that made econo-commuting cool in the 90s. Its frugal nature and bulletproof reliability meant it could literally be handed down generations. The Splendor is a brand unto itself and has remained the top-selling two-wheeler in India almost the whole time since it was launched.

Pros:

  • Sturdy build quality
  • Bulletproof powertrain
  • Good fuel efficiency

Cons:

  • Lacks performance
  • Expensive in BS6 form

TVS Star City Plus:

Best Commuter Bikes In India Up To 110cc

The Star City Plus showed us that even a 110cc commuter can be feature-packed. When launched in 2014, it came with features like a semi-digital instrument console, things that weren’t even offered in 125cc motorcycles at the time. Even the latest version sports a first-in-class LED headlamp and a mobile charging socket. It also impressed us with its refined powertrain and light handling characteristics.

Pros:

  • Offers good comfort
  • Has a refined motor
  • Feature-packed

Cons:

  • Lacks a disc brake
  • No tubeless tyres

The Splendor’s primary rival, the Bajaj CT 100 is not only more affordable than the Hero, but frugal too. It even offers a comfortable ride thanks to its SNS (spring-in-spring) rear shock absorbers. While it was missing from the Indian market for a decade, it made a comeback in 2015 as the most affordable motorcycle in the country.

Pros:

  • Extremely affordable
  • Low running costs
  • Frugal motor

Cons:

  • Lacks features
  • Dated styling
  • No tubeless tyres

The XL 100’s formula has remained unchanged for decades. It continues to be a highly durable and utilitarian two-wheeler whose sole purpose is to transport heavy loads from one place to another in the most economical way possible. This quality makes it one of the best selling two-wheelers in South India. If it wasn’t for the original two-stroke XL, TVS Racing wouldn’t be where it is today.

Pros:

  • Easy to ride
  • Easy to repair
  • Frugal motor
  • Great load carrying capacity

Cons:

  • Small fuel tank
  • Struggles to climb inclines

TVS Radeon:

Best Commuter Bikes In India Up To 110cc

The Radeon might look like the Splendor but feels a lot more premium and is more enjoyable to ride as well. Its torquey motor impresses with its low-down torque and highly frugal nature. It rides well and handles even better. The only chink in its armour is the weak drum brake setup, which should be sorted with the introduction of a disc brake option.

Pros:

  • Premium fit and finish levels
  • Comfortable seat
  • Torquey motor

Cons:

  • Lacks features
  • Understated looks

Hero Splendor iSmart:

Best Commuter Bikes In India Up To 110cc

The Splendor iSmart was meant to be a replacement to the Splendor and it is in many ways better than the original. Other than a larger and more powerful motor, the iSmart received first-in-class features like start-stop tech. Even the design makes it look like a premium 125cc motorcycle.

Pros:

  • Start-stop system is a novel and useful feature.
  • Gets a disc brake as standard fitment.
  • Refined and fuel-efficient motor.

Cons:

  • Looks understated
  • Is expensive!
