Sinha, who was the candidate of the ruling NDA, got 126 votes as against 114 polled in favour of RJDs Awadh Bihari Chaudhary who was fielded by the opposition Grand Alliance. The Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Ministers- Tar Kishor Prasad and Renu Devi- and opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav escorted Sinha to the Speaker's chair.

New Delhi: Vijay Kumar Sinha, athree-time BJP MLA from Lakhisarai and former state minister, was on Wednesday elected speaker of the Bihar assembly amid high drama.Sinha polled 126 votes in favour and 114 votes against. One independent and the lone LJP MLA also voted for Sinha. Members of the AIMIM voted against the NDA candidate. The opposition had fielded RJD MLA Awadh Bihari Choudhary as their speaker candidate.After the election, which was conducted through raising of hands, chief minister Nitish Kumar and leader of the opposition Tejashwi Yadav accompanied Sinha to his chair. As the day began, opposition members opposed the presence of Kumar and ministers Ashok Choudhary and Mukesh Sahani.“Since the chief minister and the ministers are not members of this house, they shouldn’t be present during the election process,” Tejashwi Yadav said. However, pro-tem speaker Jitan Ram Manjhi rejected his request.Manjhi said since the chief minister is the leader of the legislative party, he could be present in the house, but will not participate during voting. Initially, Manjhi asked for a voice vote in favour of Sinha, which the opposition opposed, following which Manjhi ordered voting through raising of hands. ET logo

Opposition members also demanded voting via secret ballot, which was also rejected by the pro-tem speaker. During the voting, Manjhi had to briefly adjourn the house amid protests by the Opposition.On Tuesday, former deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi alleged that RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav has called NDA MLAs urging them to remain absent during the voting.Add ET Logo
