Wait for the CCM. As a bmw owner I can say for a fact that they are extremly expensive to maintain. Fuel filter and swingarm pivot bearings/ seals... $600. Ordered the parts 3 weeks ago and im still waiting for some stuff. No jokes. A bmw dirt bike scares me because they do need more maintenance than street or ds bikes. CCM looks like a way better bike, you couldn't give me a g450x

BMW 450, KTM EXC, Honda CRF450, Yamaha WR450, etc are all dirt bikes. This means high performance which in turn means higher maintenance. Oil changes every 10+ hours, valves checked regularly, etc If you want low maintenance you give up some performance. Bikes like a drz400, crf250, klx250, wr250 are all smal dual sport bikes, low maintenance but dont have the performance of the true dirt bikes. Wanna spend 14k? The new ccm450 looks awesome. Performance and lower maintenance. I assume you arent wanting to spend this. So the question is...if you are new to trail riding and anticipate riding to the good stuff on pavement, get a dual sport. Anticipate using a trailer to get to the good stuff and want high performance then get a road legal dirt bike. No one perfect bike, its all a game of give and take. :freaky

^^^ + 1 on this. IMHO the drz is the best bang for the buck, that was my first bike. Now I have a dakar AND a wr450. ADV is pollouted with discussions about how to make your dirt bike good for touring and how to make your 400lb beast better on the trails. If you are new to trails and bikes in general get something light and low maintenance. I couldnt afford to ride if I paid a shop to work on my bikes and the light weight will help you get confident faster. Im sure the g450x is an amazing bike to ride, just perhaps not an amazing bike to own.

i went and looked at the g450x..nice bike..nice and light...it apparently has a brand new engine..replaced at 1800kms...checked with BMW and this is so....I want simple and something that if i did drop, I wouldn't panic....i've had to pick up my gsa and it ain't ez!....I'm not comfortable where the bike is being sold..I had them install a battery to listen and ride it slightly...it was leaking from the rad hose..WTF! i says to myself!...anyway, for my budget, I may go for the KLR 650....good size to get me to the trails, and to ride them...no racing for me...i heard from one bmw tech who said that he did not recommend it..the g450x...

This motor is not suitable for long distance highway driving. BMW has some kind of unit attached to it that records long high speed highway runs which would void the warranty. My buddy has one and he says its a good street legal dirt bike though .Not sure about the expensive CCW which unfortunately uses the same motor. A KLR would be much better for highway runs. So would the DR and DRZ.

"NNNNOOOOOOOO" *sound of guy falling into the abyss.... KLR's are a huge money pit once you start trying to ride them on trails. Even the bolts on KLR's are no good. And that's IF you get one with the major engine problems already fixed...... like the cam chain tensioner (failure = destroyed motor) or the ones with that burn oil and need pistons right from the factory floor (08-10?). The guys that really like them fix them first and then ride gravel roads at the very most. Think of it like an antique Vstrom made Russia. Serves the job when it's running, easy to fix (if you have parts), and don't go thinking you can pick it up easily- it's heavy... anyway, not trying to get into a "which is the best bike debate". Just saying if you want something light that can get you to trails then down them, the KLR won't be as cheap as you think....

Is that the E or the S model? Appreciate that naming conventions are different around the world but the E over here in the UK is the pure enduro model and the S is the trail version. I'm interested as in a couple of years I'll be buying a lightweight dual sport to do a spot off touring and off roading in the Balkans. At the moment I'm thinking of a Honda XR400 (transported down there by van I hasten to add)

Drz is the same here as over there, E enduro S street/trail SM supermoto... all super reliable.. E has harder suspension, different carb...SM has inverted forks 17 wheels.... DR650 air cooled just as reliable klr650 add a 100lbs.... just as reliable.. all are Cheap to drop, all new and used are about the same price,,, I'm sure the klr fairing is pricy to replace... Someone should just buy mine... :D

E model would likley not get a plate so you are stuck with S or SM. SM has better forks (though slightly shorter) and can be converted easily to off road sized wheels. S: worse forks but bigger wheels. Look for one used with a big tank already because you will need that. No expierence with the DR650 or the KLR really. I can tell you that the DRZ is S or SM trim will serve you well. if it were up to me it would come down to whatever was available locally for a deal. you likely won't go wrong with either.

This is a crock of Shit. KLR is an excellent bike. Great value for the money and reliable as hell. Most KLR owners are known for being cheep so the DON'T tend to throw much money at their bike. It is what it is however. Low horsepower, heavy bike with poor suspension. It will go anywhere, won't get there fast and might beat you up to get there :D Many KLRs have traveled the world. I have had several bikes since my KLR but still miss it for its simplicity and reliability. Every bike has known issues.... Bob From my mobile
