BMW X2 M35i Debuts With 302 Hp - 0-100 Km/h In 4.9s
BMW has decided to bless the F39 BMW X2 with even more power by revealing a new M35i variant, which the company describes as a car where sportiness is coupled with a polarising appearance.
The main draw here is what lies under the bonnet, where a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine churns out 302 hp (306 PS) and 450 Nm. BMW says the TwinPower Turbo unit is the first four-cylinder powerplant from M Performance, but didn’t disclose if it is an uprated version of the existing B48 engine. It did say that a redesigned cooling system was needed to meet higher thermal stability needs.
To make sure all that power is “securely transferred to the tarmac,” the X2 M35i gets the brand’s xDrive all-wheel drive system along with an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. Headline performance figures include a zero to 100 km/h time of just 4.9 seconds but the top speed is a mystery for now, though it will likely be electronically limited. The new variant has a claimed combined fuel consumption as low as 8.1 litres per 100 km and spews as little as 185 grammes of carbon dioxide per kilometre.
Along with a more potent powertrain, the X2 M35i comes with M Sport adaptive suspension system with two manually adjustable modes. There’s also the M Sport differential for the front axle to minimise traction loss on the front wheels.
Other enhancements include a revised steering tuning, while upgraded brakes (18-inch front steel discs and 17-inch at the rear) better help the car slow down. The brakes are found behind the 19-inch M Sport light alloy wheels (style 715M), or a set of optional 20-inch M Sport light alloy wheels (style 721M) in Cerium Grey.
Despite its potential, the X2 M35i’s styling is based upon the available M Sport package with some tweaks. For instance, the air intakes at the front are of a different design to facilitate better cooling of the brakes and engine.
Various areas like the dual kidney grille and mirror caps also receive a Cerium Grey finish, while the rear features a distinctive roof spoiler and dual exhaust outlets, each measuring 100 mm in diameter. Those tips are linked to the car’s M Sport exhaust system with an adapted silence system to make the right noises when needed.
On the inside, the basis is once again the M Sport package, with standard items being the M Sport leather-wrapped steering wheel and ‘M35i’ lettering on the door trims. BMW also offers M sports seats as an option in three different designs along with matching seatbelts.
The options list also includes a full-colour heads-up display, wireless Apple CarPlay support, along with the latest generation of BMW ConnectedDrive and the BMW Connected App. Production of the X2 M35i will start later in November this year.
