Its longevity depends heavily on regular maintenance, including timely servicing, periodic cleaning of the intake system, and active regeneration of the diesel particulate filter. The timing chains are generally long-lasting and begin to stretch only after 200,000 km. However, replacing them is a complex and expensive task, as they are located on the flywheel side. In some cases, chain failure can occur due to tensioner malfunction. Rattling noises from the engine bay, especially under load, are a clear sign that the chains may need replacement. The Bosch fuel system with piezo injectors performs well but is sensitive to low-quality diesel. Over time, the particulate filter and EGR valve can clog, particularly if the engine is not regularly driven under conditions that allow regeneration. In versions with vacuum-controlled turbochargers, the hoses tend to dry out and crack. The engine also uses a crankshaft damper pulley, which is common for diesels but can fail between 100,000 and 150,000 km.
