Rumor: BMW X8 might arrive, but as a BMW X8 M with over 600 hp

The new range-topping BMW X8 M model would be conceived as a competitor to the likes of the Audi RS8, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

The topic of the BMW X8 crossover is back in full force. We’ve reported a few months ago that BMW is strongly considering an X8 luxury SUV, but at the time, we left out an important detail – the Bavarians are also considering an X8 M as the single model for the X8 family.

The second–sort of confirmation–came this week from Autocar citing some M sources. According to the UK magazine, the new range-topping X8 M model would be conceived as a competitor to the likes of the Audi RS8, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

Under the hood, the X8 M would get the 4.4 liter V8 TwinTurbo unit known from the newly unveiled M8, which implies a power output of over 600 horsepower.

We’ve already learned that almost certainly the X8 won’t take the shape of an X6 or X7, but rather have its own identify within the design language at BMW. Think along the lines of a new kidney grill design.

The X8 has always been rumored to be a more luxurious model, with a more bespoke finish for the discerning customer looking for the ultimate luxury. It will also be more expensive than the X7 and will most likely become the priciest car with a BMW roundel on you can buy.

The G09 X8 will use the same underpinnings of the X7 but will offer seating for four, with individual seats in the back, kind-of like what we can already see on the X7. Whether a third-row of seats will be offered remains unknown right now.

BMW has yet to reach the final decision on the X8 M, but the deadline is set sometimes before the end of 2019. If it comes to market, it won’t be probably before 2021 and it will have a shorter production time.
