Bo 7 Mon Thanh Tam - Vietnamese ~ Haymarket
Bo 7 Mon Thanh Tam, the most famous seven delights of beef, is back in Haymarket inside the Mountbatten Hotel. I'll have a schooner of New with me pho, thanks. Bo 7 Mon Thanh Tam was until a few months ago located on Level 3 of Market City food court. The closure of that space meant some stalls stayed and moved downstairs to Level 1, and other have moved on or simply closed. We had a beaming smile when we saw this Vietnamese stall had moved inside the pub just a block away. On a sunny day without much breeze, a bit of a shady sit outside with your noodles is a fine thing. All you need really are some small blue plastic stools and low tables to make you feel like you're on the streets of Saigon. Oh and probably about a thousand more motorcycles. Bun bo hue (spicy noodle soup). Why oh why isn't there more love for this soup? While pho seems to get all of the spotlight, it's spicier cousin gets relegated to second place. Perhaps it's the stronger soup flavour, perhaps it's the pieces of tripe and tendon that scare eaters away. Who knows, we just love this soup. Served with shredded lettuce and bean sprouts to add as you wish. Rare beef pho $10. This beef soup is a sweeter style pho filled with a generous portion of beef slices. As you dig through the noodles and cloudy broth you just keep on coming up with pieces of tender just cooked beef. The broth is usual for a pho you'd find in southern Vietnam, a little sweeter and less five spice aromatic but not lacking in beef flavour. It's also darker in colour than many others around, it has been cooked with care to preserve the beefiness. As well as the usual bean sprouts, herb and lemon combo, the owner also brings out some hoisin and fresh red chillis to add in for extra punch. While a bun bo hue is still our favourite, this one is worth a try. There's a larger menu and a bain-marie-of-love with some good looking 'three with rice' options. You can even get a steak or burger and chips, the bistro menu is fairly wide. Bo 7 Mon Thanh Tam is at 701 George Street, inside the Mountbatten Hotel, Haymarket. Ph: 02 8317 6341. If you want a more-local but very good bun bo hue, I really like Bowl & Roll on Marrickville Rd in Marrickville. I got takeaway yesterday and it was full of Viet people over the age of 60.
