Thanks Stu Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Mar 6, 2011 According to the german Phaeton newsboard on Motor-Talk.de the interior lights are not monitored by canbus. #3 · Mar 6, 2011 Thank you! 0 Reply #4 · Mar 6, 2011 As a result of my experiments today I can confirm that ALL the rear roof bulbs (rear illumination = 2*festoon AND rear reading = 2*W5W glass socket) ARE monitored by the roof control unit. The festoons can be replaced with LEDs which have resistors built in (have them installed and working). For the reading lights there is very little room for LEDs with resistor packs. The "wrong type" LEDs were turned off instantly and the roof control unit reported "normal" bulb out warnings for VAG COM scan. Have now bought Philips "Cool blue" regular bulbs for the reading lights. In the front, I have so far replaced the three festoons with LEDs. My LEDs have the check control resistors and they work fine. Have not tried non-"canbus" LEDs in there or tried replacing the reading lights yet. Yep, and what bugs me most is that these "festoons" came in a VERY wide variety of sizes and wattages! I believe the bulb type is officially C5W (when rated at five watts). The VW ELSA manual refers to the Phaeton cabin light bulbs as "festoon 12 V, 6 W". They are 39mm long and are 6 Watts. This is untypical. Standard bulbs are 5W and they come in 36mm and 41mm lengths. The 36mm bulb is not a good fit - you cannot really bend the bulb socket/pins enough to make good contact. So beware! 41mm fits much better. Jouko #8 · Mar 7, 2011 So - festoon is a word in common usage in English English to describe a bulb type, but that's all it does - it does not imply any other specification or standard. I thought it really described the shape, with the conical connecting caps at either end. Or is there another name for that?: I guess the bulb itself is common in North America - if nothing else it will appear in European imports. What name does it go by there? There are expensive, hot and the ends tend to corrode off. I have been slowing replacing all of mine of my boat with the LED style, very nice but even more expensive! #10 · Mar 8, 2011 These festoon bulbs are really great because of their low power consumption and amazing lighting possibilities. Their power consumption is very low too. Most of them only use between 0.2 and 0.4 watts, less than a tenth of normal bulbs. Good news for the convenience battery! This "Superbright Festoon" Website has many many models, with various beam patterns too. I guess it requires a lot of experimenting to find out which type is best for each specific application. It could be a hobby to personalize your car by choosing colour(s) matching your personal taste. One thing which is puzzling me, is how the CAN bus (or actually the controller) detects whether a bulb is defective or not. As electronics guy, I guess that the controller checks the current going to the bulb and when this falls below a pre-set threshold, a "bulb defect" is generated. I know that you can activate each bulb using VAG-COM, to check them without actually switching them on, but I'm not aware of the car actually reporting defective bulbs. Won't post photos just yet. I currently have "regular" cool white leds in roof lights and they are too blueish for my taste. I have ordered some "warm white" leds and know by experience that even they are pretty far from "warm" and should be nice. Will see how it turns out and post pictures then. In the meantime, I have replaced footwell lights and did it "the hard way". This was because I kind-of-accidentally burned the fuse for the front footwell lights. Boy, was it complicated to read the wring schematics in order to find out what fuse it was that burned out... :) That is because the interior lights are controller in an interesting way: as you can believe is the case with the Phaeton, there are no lights whatsoever which would be switched on by a simple door switch... Its all in the databus! But, there are variations as to how the lights are controlled, depending on the trim level. The onboard supply control unit (bordnetz) powers more lights in lesser equipped cars. In cars with 18-way seats, for example, the rear footwell lights are powered by seat control units instead of bordnetz. Therefore there are several alternative wiring diagrams - causing a lot of confusion for the newcomer. And, needless to say, the door entry lights are bus-driven via the door control units and roof lights by the roof control unit... So, in my car the only lights powered directly by the bordnetz appear to be the two front footwell bulbs. And - because I was lazy and did not bother disconnecting the wiring before I replaced the bulbs - I ended up burning the fuses... Now, I got to read the wiring diagrams and it puzzled me that the diagram clearly said that both the front and rear footwell lights are powered from the very same pin at bordnetz... Front lights were out, rear lights worked... :-I After a lot of studying found out the reason for this and it got me tracing the blown fuse. Everything else in the car seemed to work, so the fuse could not have been too many amps. There are about half a dozen fuses powering the bordnetz - and it is nowhere mentioned exactly which function controlled by bordnetz the fuses are used for! I ended up making a short list of four suspect fuses, with their locations, and started pulling them. First one i pulled out was burned, bingo! It was a tiny 5-amp fuse which apparently only powers the two tiny 6w footwell bulbs. Of course there could be something else, too, but you really cannot tell by looking at the schematics. Bordnetz is simply a black (in fact grey) box where lots of wires go in and come out from. I kind of hate this bordnetz box. Now, the next thing is that those pesky footwell lights are - of course - supervised by bordnetz. You will need resistor-equipped "can bus" leds for them... And - as no-one seems to know much about coding the bordnetz - you really cannot turn off bulb supervision, either! This is not that much of an issue with a small led, but I am also in a process of retrofitting facelifted bi-xenon headlights, where there are no separate bulbs for high beams, as the high beam is made simply by moving a shade screen with a solenoid. The solenoid will not draw even nearly enough power to keep the "bulb out warning" away, so I am prepared to install some _serious_ resistors in there to emulate the load for high beams. This is simply stupid, I know, but until someone breaks the secrets of programming away the bulb supervision... Does anyone, by any chance, have experience with retrofitting the "facelifted" (2007+) model's bordnetz unit into an older vehicle? In that box you could turn off bulb supervision for the high beams. I am wondering how compatible they might be. Only the last letter of part number has been changed yet they are not mentioned being exhangeable. Jouko #14 · Mar 18, 2011 Led / smd Hi all together, my Phaeton is an 10/2006, modell 2006 and i already changed all interior bulbs into LED/SMD - my front blinkers getting it too and my parking light also..... ! Even my licenceplatelights are LED/SMD powered now ! And I changed them all into can bus working LED/SMD´s, because the Phaeton is quiet an DIVA....so I just make sure, that she´s feeling alright....
