In production since 1958, the FN MAG was designed by a team led by Ernest Vervier, hence the sometimes used MAG 58 designation. The MAG (Miltrailleuse d'Appui General), has become on of the western world's most successful and widespread of all post Second World War machine gun designs and it is still in production both in Belgium and by licensed manufacturers - well over 150,000 units have been manufactured. Although the vast majority of MAGs have been manufactured in hte 7.62 x 51mm NATO, other calibers have been produced, notably for Sweden in calibre of 6.5mm as the Ksp 58 GPMG. In addition to the infantry version of the MAG (FN 60-20) there is also a coaxial version intended for use on armored vehicles (FN 60-40). The FN 60-30 is an aircraft version.
