History[]

The Colt Canada C7 is a Canadian assault rifle, manufactured by Colt Canada (formerly Diemaco prior to 2005), a variant of the Armalite AR-15, and having similar design and function to the Colt M16A3.

The C7 and its variants have been adopted as the standard-issue rifle by the military forces of Canada, Norway (special forces only), Denmark, and the Netherlands. Following trials, C8 variants (which is just a Carbine variant of the C7) are general issue firearms for the United Kingdom's Special Forces and other specialist users within the British military. It has been utilized in various combat deployments by Canadian, British, Norwegian, Dutch, and Danish forces in Afghanistan and Iraq.[1]

The C7 is offered in multiple variants such as the C7 LSW (similar to the Colt LMG), the C7CT (A DMR version), and the MRR (A modular variant with multiple barrel lengths).[1]

In-Game[]

General Information[]

The C7A2 is a below-average damage assault rifle, sporting a somewhat lower maximum damage of 30 and a poor minimum damage of 19. This results in the C7A2 being a four-shot kill (4SK) up close like most members of its class but drops to a 6SK; the only assault rifle which does so. Interestingly, the C7A2 has an above-average headshot multiplier of 1.5x, meaning the C7A2 is capable of a 3HK (headshot-kill) up close, and 4HK at all ranges. Range is best in-class, with a maximum range of 100 studs and minimum range of 200 studs, meaning the C7A2 has a 4SK range of ~145 studs: a cut above most assault rifles. Rate of fire (RoF) is above-average for its class at 800 RPM, as is muzzle velocity at 2800 studs per second - tied with the M16A3 and AS VAL, but losing out to M16A1 at its maximum RoF of 950 RPM and M231, at 1225 RPM. This results in the C7A2 having a relatively good time-to-kill (TTK) at close to medium range, but past 200 studs the C7A2 loses out to all other assault rifles with body shots, and even loses out to some personal defense weapons.

The C7A2 has overall low recoil for an assault rifle, with somewhat moderate vertical recoil and some horizontal kick and deviation when aiming down sights (ADS). It has low recoil per shot but does have moderate first shot recoil and has low to moderate camera recoil. Hipfire accuracy is typical for its weapon class, as well as equip speed, aim speed and walking speeds. Penetration is the worst of any assault rifle, at 0.9 studs' depth, and given the lower base damage figures, the C7A2 is subsequently a poor performer when shooting through walls, although most assault rifles boast a penetration of 1.0 studs' depth, so the difference is often negligible when shooting through light cover.

The C7A2 has one of the fastest reload times in-class, at 1.8 seconds for a tactical reload and 2.6 seconds for an empty reload; 0.1 seconds faster than the M16A3 and M16A4 and rivals the speed of PDWs and carbines. Ammunition capacity is typical for an assault rifle, at 30+1 rounds. Reserve ammunition is also typical, at 120 rounds. Given the higher RoF, the C7A2's ammunition consumption rate is relatively high but fortunately, the C7A2's ammunition type is quite common.

Notably, the C7A2 immediately has access to the C79 optic that is unlocked by default. This provides the C7A2 with a versatile optic capable of being used at medium range with its 3.5x magnified scope, and at close range with its back up iron sights atop of the optic. The C7A2 also has access to the AR 7.62x39mm a conversion kit which drastically changes the weapon's performance that is worth considering using. Using the Full Stock attachment on the C7A2 changes its name to the C7A1, however the stat changes are just standard for a Full Stock and not a full conversion.

Usage & Tactics[]

The C7A2 is a versatile close-to-medium range assault rifle, but unlike the M16A3, the C7A2 trades better long-range damage and better penetration for better accuracy and reload times which make it more ideal in certain close-quarters-combat (CQC) scenarios but also medium-ranged engagements. Its TTK rivals some PDWs and carbines up close whilst also rivaling some assault rifles at medium ranges such as the AUG A3 and G36.

A C7A2 user should ideally remain within the close-to-medium range bracket to avoid CQC engagements against CQC-orientated weapons such as the MP5/10, MP7 and MP5K. The C7A2 on its own lacks the damage output required to compete in exclusively close-range situations. On the flip side, the C7A2 lacks the higher maximum damage to be competitive at longer distances despite the low recoil and higher muzzle velocity. Maximizing the C7A2's strengths and taking advantage of its good medium range prowess is the way to go for the C7A2. The C7A2 is able to be customized to various play styles, whether it be aggressive, defensive or stealth. The C7A2 can be used with rushing-style tactics given its higher RoF suits more aggressive playing style. The C7A2's recoil also makes it well suited to defensive tactics, and its damage model makes suppressors more viable than on some other assault rifles.

Attachment wise, the C7A2 remains more compatible with most attachments than other weapons. Regarding optics, the C79 is a great choice for those looking to maximize the versatility of the C79 by providing a medium-range optic and close-range iron sight in the one optic. Alternatively, most user's choices for a low magnification optic will work, such as the Reflex Sight, Coyote Sight or EOTech 552 sight. However, any higher magnification sight such as the VCOG 6x Scope tend to not be as effective given the poor long-range damage.

Barrel attachment wise, without any of the ammunition conversion kits, the suppressors are relatively viable. Given the damage model and higher muzzle velocity, the suppressors are less penalizing to the shots-to-kill (STK) profile of the C7A2 and still have better muzzle velocity compared to other assault rifles when suppressed. A stealth build is more appealing as it does not ruin the weapon's performance at that key close-to-medium range bracket. Alternatively, the Compensator or muzzle brake are viable options to lower the recoil further on the C7A2. The C7A2 also has an LSW barrel. Renaming it into Diemaco LSW, this attachment will greatly reduce recoil and massively increases ranges in exchange for terrible handling and firerate. This attachment is excellent for medium to long range as almost every bullet will hit with the reduced recoil and fire rate, and it increases the minimum damage, allowing it to 5SK to the torso at all ranges. It is not really recommended for most players, however, as the LSW barrel increases TTK and reduces handling, turning it into a downgraded SCAR-L.

As for underbarrel attachments, the Vertical Grip is a good option for those wishing to gear the C7A2 for better hipfire performance, although utilizing it will reduce ADS stability and should only really be used for a CQC-orientated play style, whereas an Angled Grip is better for more all-rounder builds. The Stubby Grip is a good choice for those who want more accurate shots while aiming down the sights as the grip excels at smoothing out most recoil in general. As for an auxiliary attachment, the standard laser is a good starting attachment, however, other colored lasers are also good options.

The AR 7.62x39mm conversion option changes the C7A2. The C7A2 with the conversion has higher damage, allowing it to kill in five shots at long range and three shots at close range, as well as better range, making it much better at long range combat. However, the magazine capacity is reduced by 33% to 26+1 rounds, and sees a significant increase to its recoil, forcing the need to invest into appropriate grips and muzzle attachments to mitigate recoil.

The .20 Tactical conversion makes the C7A2 much more aggressive. In exchange for slightly higher recoil and 33% decreased magazine size .20 Tact gives the C7A2 some better stats, such as a 1.7 second reload, 2940 muzzle velocity, a 1.575x headshot multiplier, 1.125 stud penetration, and greatly increased handling. This conversion is highly recommended because of its huge increase to overall stats and an improvement to its already aggressive playstyle.

Conclusion[]

As assault rifles go, the C7A2 fits quite in the middle of the pack but offers unique potential due to its low recoil. Akin to the M16A3, the C7A2 performs well in the close-to-medium range bracket but can be customized to fit a user's preference. The unique attachments also change up the playstyle of the C7A2 to fit either CQC or long-range combat, allowing the C7A2 to be fit for any engagement range if kitted up correctly. Its modularity is often a source of strength as it provides versatility for every player.

Trivia[]

  • The C7A2 was removed before the Phantom Forces Beta release along with the Sten.
    • The C7A2 and the Sten were the only guns in the Phantom Forces Alpha with optics other than iron sights that were removed for the Beta.
  • Although the C7A2 was removed from the game until its return in July 2020, the C79 optic remained as an attachment for other weapons.
  • Currently, it is the second AR-15 model in game using the standard A2 style handguard with the first model being the Beowulf ECR. The other AR-15 rifles in game use a railed handguard.
  • When attaching the LSW barrel attachment, it swaps the A2 handguard for the handguard seen on the Colt LMG that also comes with an unusable carry handle.
    • It is one of the few barrel attachments that can modify damage values, including Type 20's Integral Suppressor, after the suppressor rework update.
    • The LSW Barrel would rename the gun into Diemaco LSW.
  • The C7A2 has a similar bolting animation as the old HK416 for the old reload animation.
  • In the test place, the C7A2 initially borrowed its firing sound from the Tommy Gun until it was changed from what HypocriticalDragon described as a "sourcing issue.” [2]
  • The C7A2 is one of the last guns from the Alpha version of Phantom Forces to be added back into the game.
    • The return of the C7A2 is referenced to in the in-game description.
  • The C7A2's charging handle is slightly different than the rest of the AR-15 Family rifles. The C7A2's charging handle has a white extension piece that looks like a hook or a tab. In real life, this feature is known as the Ambi Charging Handle, which is standard equipment on the C7A2. it essentially allows both left- and right-handed operators to charge the weapon without having to break their grip on the handle.
  • When equipping the Bundeswehr sight, the front post is missing.
  • The default rear iron sight of the C7A2 is actually used as a backup sight. Although it is a standard piece of equipment by Canadian armed forces, it is not commonly distributed to and used by the Canadian infantry. The standard sighting system for the C7A2 is the C79 scope.
    • The rear iron sight is generally mounted on the top receiver rail, in front of the standard C79 scope, which allow it to be used right after the scope is removed.
      • Unlike the in-game representation, the C79 scope is mounted higher than the iron sights, therefore the reticle is higher than the front sight and should not be obstructed by it.
      • The C79 Scope is actually supposed to be for the C7A2. However, due to it being removed, the C79 stayed in the game, with the developers never changing its model.
  • When using the LSW attachment for the C7A2, it creates loud whiz and crack sounds similar to L86 LSW and many sniper rifles when fired upon by the enemy.
    • That suppression effect has already been nerfed.
  • The C7A2 was both hated and loved for its long-range capabilities, and how low the recoil was, and remains relatively accurate to this day.
  • The C7A2 once had a .45 ACP conversion, but it was since removed in place of .20 Tactical.
