Caddy 1.9TDI loss of power when turbo kicks in

Morning all, I have a Caddy 1.9TDI and have recently noticed that when first starting the van and pulling away, as I go to change from 1st to 2nd gear, typically 2500ish RPM, the engine sometimes feels as though it's going to loose power/stall. The first time it happened I pulled over, then pulled away and it was fine. It's happened 3 or 4 times since and I've now realised that if I give it more throttle it seems to pull through it, and it's then fine. Any idea what this could be? It may be coincidence but it's seems to happen first thing in the morning when it's cold. Any suggestion appreciated. There's a similar thread to this on this page mate. Have a look in there. Top James_Solihull Caddy Fan Posts: 74 Joined: Sat Aug 18, 2012 11:28 pm Engine size/power: 1.2 TSI (84bhp)Re: Caddy 1.9TDI loss of power when turbo kicks in

It seems to happen more frequently now, but only ever when changing from 1st to 2nd gear. I've also noticed it happens as soon as I start the van in the mornings, as I pull away and go to change to 2nd, the van sounds and feels really rough, as though it wants to stall. Any more suggestions before I get it booked in? Top James_Solihull Caddy Fan Posts: 74 Joined: Sat Aug 18, 2012 11:28 pm Engine size/power: 1.2 TSI (84bhp)

It's now happening more frequently, and I've noticed oil on the underside of the car on the drivers side of the sump. The bottom pulley on the timing belt also has signs of oil dripping on to it. From what I could make out at a quick glance, the turbo is located somewhere above this at the back of the engine? And from reading on here, it may be signs of the turbo on the way out? Any thoughts? I'd get it booked in mate, I had similar symptoms and replaced a few bits but after a couple of weeks or so the turbo totally went, had to fork out 300 quid for a reconditioned oneRe: Caddy 1.9TDI loss of power when turbo kicks in

If you hadn't mentioned the oil at the back of the engine id have said try the airflow meter, but seeing as there is signs of oil the 1st thing to do is pull the pipes off the intercooler and see if there is oil in them, if there is your turbo is in trouble. Symtems seem to suggest your turbos about to say goodbye. Top James_Solihull Caddy Fan Posts: 74 Joined: Sat Aug 18, 2012 11:28 pm Engine size/power: 1.2 TSI (84bhp)Re: Caddy 1.9TDI loss of power when turbo kicks in

Thanks for the replies. I hoped this wouldn't be the response I got. Only had the van 2months and I was only saying the other day how pleased I am with it. Looks like it's going to be an expensive fix. If anyone else has had similar issues/symptoms please let me know what the problem/bill was. TopRe: Caddy 1.9TDI loss of power when turbo kicks in

Yeh sorry to bring the bad news mate, total bill for mine was around 470, turbo was 290 with a 2 year guarentee, had to buy a couple of other little bits, new oil filter etc. and the labour for the VW Tech to fit it. Best of luck. 2012 Caddy 1.6TDI 140bhp / 19'' Inovit Haste / Rear Spoiler / 50mm Drop / GTI Brakes / Golf R32 Seats / Touran Dash / Touran Rear Seats Top James_Solihull Caddy Fan Posts: 74 Joined: Sat Aug 18, 2012 11:28 pm Engine size/power: 1.2 TSI (84bhp)Re: Caddy 1.9TDI loss of power when turbo kicks in

Still haven't had time to get the van booked in, however I've been using the van for the past 6 days, and it's been fine. I've not lost power or had any trouble with the turbo...surely this problem cannot be down to the turbo? Will still get it booked in but now I'm thinking it may not be the turbo on the way out? Hi mate, you manage to get this sorted. Have you ran any diagnostics through the van? Going through the same problem but I have a under boost issue changed all three sensors still no joy. Finally got my dad to plug his diagnostics machine into it tonight, and there's no errors as I thought. Had the EGR valve cleaned and it does feel smoother, however time will tell. I've noticed it's almost as though the turbo veins get stuck, and whenever it happens there's like a chattering noise. But it only lasts a few seconds and by the the time I engage the clutch and change to 2nd, the juddering/chattering noise disappears and the van feels fine. This seems to be a common problem - mine has very similar problems - its going in tomorrow to the garage to have this sorted I'm told that its either a valve coked up or the turbo on its way out also yesterday the exhaust warning light came on which I believe that these problems are related over to the techies ! 104 bhp maxi - 6 speed o2q conversion - rcd 510 dab c/w Bluetooth & mdi - remap 162 bhp - facelift highline cluster - caddy 4 tail lights - 19” vw motorsport alloys - bilstein/eibach sportline suspension - r32 front brakes - scirocco front seats - caddy life centre console - mk6 flat bottom mfsw - caddy 4 folding mirrors Top James_Solihull Caddy Fan Posts: 74 Joined: Sat Aug 18, 2012 11:28 pm Engine size/power: 1.2 TSI (84bhp)Re: Caddy 1.9TDI loss of power when turbo kicks in

I still haven't had mine fixed! I've now realised it only happens after a few days of short journeys. If the Caddy gets a good run out, I.e. 50mile plus, the lost of power won't happen for a few days or maybe a week. However if just using it around town for short trips, it's more likely to occur. There have been occasions where it hasn't happened for 10-12 days, then it will randomly loose power for 5 seconds when pulling away in first and then run fine. Let me know if you get yours sorted please mate. Top Post Reply- Print view
