Crasher said: The units fail anyway even on the Golf 7 but on the 6 they are exposed to moisture which they don't like. Remove the wipers (often an evil job, the TT Mk2 I did yesterday was a sod) and remove the plenum chamber cover. Remove the wiper motor and behind it there is a black cover, remove this and the CAN BUS unit is below. When you build it back up, RTV seal the cover back on for added protection. Click to expand...just a thought, is the Touran the same in this regard? I have water ingress issues in that side of the car!! 0 Reply #3 · Jun 26, 2021 Thanks a lot for your reply, I will strip it down on Monday. I have only been searching inside the car so feel like an idiot now. I should be okay stripping the scuttle panel down, I am a mobile mechanic so do it most days... Will update when I have it off and a new gateway ordered. Thanks, Wes #4 · Jun 28, 2021 So I removed the scuttle panel, wiper motor and the access panel today to get to the CAN gateway. However there was no evidence of moisture or water intake on the CAN Gateway box itself, I even pulled the circuit board out to check the PCB for any moisture or evidence or it however it seemed perfectly fine, no burn marks or water damage whatsoever. I put it near a heat source for 5 minutes just to rule out any hidden moisture and plugged it back into the car, the car then drove perfect, no faults whatsoever. Not sure what to do now if to order an Ebay one at £45 or do you think unplugging it and plugging it back in has done anything ? This is the first time its not shown the fault since it began playing up... Also if I was to replace with a 2nd hand one off Ebay, are they coded to each car or just plug and play units? Thanks, Wes #5 · Jul 1, 2021 The replacement module would need to be coded to match the old module. #6 · Jul 1, 2021 Second hand is not a good idea. #7 · Oct 12, 2021 I have replaced my gateway with the exact same AKZ00 however I have water damage on the gateway so how can I match the code ? #8 · Oct 12, 2021 You need the long coding value from the original or you will have to painstakingly work your way through the coding table to work it out, or take it to someone who has ODIS so the VW server in Germany can calculate it for you. #9 · Jul 4, 2023 Wes did you get to the soloution for this problem exact same issue on mine #11 · Jul 6, 2023 Yes #12 · Jul 16, 2023
Wes said: Good evening, currently have a VW Golf MK6 2012 1.6tdi I am working on with some rather weird electrical issues. So the car wasn't used for about 4-5 months as it ran out of MOT. I took it for the MOT, passed with flying colours no problem however shortly after I started getting an ESP fault on the dash. I wasn't too concerned as presumed it would be a wheel speed sensor or something small along the lines however in the following couple of days more electrical gremlins started to appear. The power steering light came next blinking red and yellow consistently within an hour of driving every single light came on the dashboard, airbags, eml, low fuel, abs everything you name it was illuminated. I tried to limp the car home the 50 mile journey I had to do, the rev counter and speedometer cutting out and coming back to life. during all of this the locks kept cycling on and off every few seconds. 10 miles before home it flashed 'Low Oil Pressure' so I turned the engine off let it cool down, checked the oil and it was fine got it recovered as a precaution and changed the oil as a precaution the next day there was no metal swarf so I know this must have been another electrical gremlin playing up. Got the car home and scanned it with my Autel MK808, came up with 5-6 non communication faults havn't got exact codes but they said something along the lines of no communication with Airbag ecu, no communication with steering collumn ecu etc. Bit of research led me to believe the canbus gateway had failed, apparently this is a common issue on the Mk6s, ive never really worked on canbus networks or the likes but I need to find this Can-Bus gateway box as all my research seems to point towards this box. Some forums I have read tell me it should either be directly above the clutch pedal (which I have as its a manual) or behind the money pot thing below the light switch however after 1 hour of searching and stripping the steering collumn shrouds I can not find it. Has anyone got a photo of it or an exact location where it should be, apparently it has a red plug although that seems to be more on the Mk5 models. any help is much appreciated.
