Can Noctua L9I Cool Delid 7700K?

#1 · May 10, 2017 I was looking on Noctua's site, and it says that the 7700K can be cooled but with AVX offset. I have a friend who is thinking about a Fractal Design Node 202 and they want to get a 7700K. I think even at stock for the cooler to do well, the CPU would have to be delidded. Anyone have any idea on this or have done something like that? Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · May 10, 2017 Quote:

I've done a node 202 with that exact cooler. It can definitely do it delidded, but it's not going to overclock well. I was still thermally limited around 1.25V for encoding after delidding. #3 · May 10, 2017 I think he is only interested in gaming. The GPU will likely be a 1080TI and I am looking at the EVGA SC2 model which I may switch out with mine and give him my FTW 1080. What are your temps after the delid on stock clock? #4 · May 11, 2017 So here's what I'm going to do. For right now, I've gotten him to just get the mobo and the case. I'll move my 7700K into t, slap the L9I on it, run some tests at stock and see where the temperatures sit. If they are too high, I planned on delidding my chip anyway, and I'll test after that. If the temps are still too high, I'll play around with undervolting, but I think I'm going to recommend he get something else. Possibly a I5 or a I7-7700 (non-K) since the non-K version has lower TDP. My 7700K is running at 5 GHz @ 1.35v with a 4.7 cache, and I've been running it that way since March 24/7. It has not crashed and I have been gaming with it like a madman (ME: A, Wildlands, etc.) Should have enough information. There's too many unknowns for me right now. #5 · May 11, 2017 Quote:

The 7700k is a beast with hyperthreading, it's going to run quite hot. You might as well drill 2 slots in the back and attach an aio to the back of it haha. Take a look at this and you'll see why, Noctua has some amazing technical pages. http://noctua.at/en/nh_l9i_tdp_guidelines Thats what i would do with such a small case if you wanted a 7700k with OC room, make an aio fit to the back of the case somehow, could even buy a radiator stand and make it sit behind the case thumb.gif #6 · May 11, 2017 I will see what he thinks. I also told him that an I5 might be better suited for what he wants to do. Or something that will run cooler. I dont think he will agree with the aio mod but I will put it on the table. #7 · May 11, 2017 Trying to get him to compromise. The Nano S seems like an option here for the water cooling options on the CPU. Its a tiny bit bigger, but very clear why its a better idea, especially if he won't compromise on the 7700K.
