Research summary
Cilia are hair-like structures protruding out of the cell, and take part in a wide variety of biological processes. Ciliary abnormalities, namely ciliopathies, usually have detrimental effects on the development and health of patients, such as retardation, blindness and chronic respiratory diseases. Dr. Khanh Huy Bui’s work on the 3D structure of the cilia has revealed how cilia maintain their stability and elasticity through a network of proteins inside their lumen. Bui will further uncover the role proteins play on cilia’s stability and assembly. The results will provide opportunities to effectively diagnose and treat cilia-related diseases.
