Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, we are going to illustrate the Canon 600D and Nikon D5200 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Canon 600D has external dimensions of 133 x 100 x 80 mm (5.24 x 3.94 x 3.15″) and weighs 570 g (1.26 lb / 20.11 oz) (including batteries). Nikon D5200 has external dimensions of 129 x 98 x 78 mm (5.08 x 3.86 x 3.07″) and weighs 555 g (1.22 lb / 19.58 oz) (including batteries).
Below you can see the front-view size comparison of the Canon 600D and the Nikon D5200. Nikon D5200 is clearly the smaller of the two cameras. Its body is 4mm narrower, 2mm shorter and 2mm thinner than Canon 600D.
Here is the back view size comparison of the Canon 600D and Nikon D5200.
Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Nikon D5200 is 15g lighter than the Canon 600D but we don't think this will make a significant difference.
Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you also have to take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since both Canon 600D and Nikon D5200 have the same APS-C sized sensor, their lenses for a similar focal length and aperture will be similar in size and weight.

600D D5200 Min Average Max Weather SealingUnfortunately neither the Canon EOS 600D (EOS Rebel T3i / EOS Kiss X5) nor Nikon D5200 provides any type of weather sealing in their bodies, so you have to give extra care especially when you are shooting outdoors. If weather sealing is a must-have feature for you, check these sections: Top DSLR Cameras with Weather Sealing
LCD Screen Size and FeaturesCanon 600D and Nikon D5200's LCD screens have the same diagonal size of 3.00 inches.
Both cameras feature Fully Articulating screens where you can change the angle of the screen to make it easier to shoot from waist or over-the-head levels. Fully articulating screens are also useful for taking Selfies and video. Canon 600D has a 18.0MP APS-C (22.3 x 14.9 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Digic 4 processor. On the other hand, Nikon D5200 has a 24.0MP APS-C (23.5 x 15.6 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Expeed 3 processor.Nikon D5200's sensor provides 6MP more than Canon 600D's sensor, which gives a significant advantage in real life. You can print your images larger or crop more freely. On the other hand, please keep in mind that Max sensor resolution is not the only determinant of resolving power. Factors such as the optical elements, low pass filter, pixel size and sensor technology also affects the final resolution of the captured image.
Below you can see the 600D and D5200 sensor size comparison.
As seen above, Nikon D5200 has a 1.1x Larger sensor area than Canon 600D. Larger sensors give photographer more control on the depth of field and blurry background compared to smaller sensor when shot in same focal length and aperture.
DxOMark Sensor ScoresDxOMark is a benchmark that scientifically assesses image quality of camera sensors. It scores camera sensors for color depth (DXO Portrait), dynamic range (DXO Landscape) and low-light sensitivity (DXO Sports), and also gives them an overall score. Canon 600D and Nikon D5200 sensors have been tested by DxO and the results show that D5200 has a better overall score of 84, 19 points higher compared to 600D's score of 65.
| Model | Overall | Color Depth | Dynamic Range | Low-light ISO |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canon 600D | 65 | 22.1 bits | 11.5 Evs | 793 ISO |
| Nikon D5200 | 84 | 24.2 bits | 13.9 Evs | 1284 ISO |
The number of available lenses is a big deciding factor when choosing your interchangeable lens camera. When we look at the available lenses for these two cameras, we see that the Canon 600D has an advantage over the Nikon D5200. There are 333 lenses for the Canon 600D's Canon EF/EF-S mount, but on the other hand, there are only 316 lenses for the Nikon D5200's Nikon F lens mount.
Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. None of these bodies have sensor based image stabilization so you have to buy lenses with Optical stabilization feature. Currently there are 114 lenses for Canon EF/EF-S mount and 108 lenses for Nikon F mount with IS.
