So, naturally, you would expected that the M100 is the more functional camera, but it doesn’t always work that way.

As a matter of fact, the M3 still stands to be the better camera to shoot with in low and difficult lighting conditions.

This camera is the only one of the two – Canon EOS M3 vs M100 – that gives you the option of using an external flash to better the lighting in your shooting location.

In addition to that, this camera, unlike the M100, comes with the auto exposure bracketing feature which helps you shoot easily in difficult lighting conditions.

This means that if you intend to do a lot of HDR photography, the M3 is your better option.

However, the M100 does not always play second fiddle.

This camera slightly outdoes its counterpart in battery capacity, burst mode speed, and compactness.

And it gets better!

The Canon EOS M100 is the only one of the two with Bluetooth. And you already know what that means for your wireless connectivity.

Furthermore, if you would be recording a lot of videos, pay attention to this camera. Because it is the only one with video stabilization.

Common Features – Canon EOS M3 vs M100

The Canon EOS M3 and M100 have the following similarities:

i. Entry-level cameras

ii. Mirrorless cameras

iii. Articulating screen

iv. Face detection focus

v. Built-in flash

vi. HDMI output

vii. Touch screen

viii. Built-in Wi-Fi

ix. Near field communication (NFC)

x. Remote control

xi. APS-C sensor

xii. RAW support

Entry-level Cameras

These cameras – Canon EOS M3 vs M100 – are both entry-level ones, which means that they are made primarily for amateur usage.

So, because this is their fundamental purpose, these cameras are lightweight and compact, affordable, and very user friendly. These are the main things that make an entry-level camera.

That being said, do not expect that these cameras will come in a 100 per cent durable bodies. They are not made to withstand intense use.

Mirrorless Cameras

A mirrorless camera is one that is made without a mirror and does not feature an optical viewfinder.

Instead, it features an electronic viewfinder, or in some cases – like with these cameras we are examining today – no viewfinder at all.

Because of this lack of a mirror mechanism, mirrorless cameras are usually more compact than their DSLR counterparts.

However, they are known to have a bad reputation in the battery department.

Contrary to what many think, mirrorless cameras are not inferior to DSLRs. In fact, in recent years, the earlier have been catching up with the latter very rapidly.

If you want to learn more about these camera types and the rivalry that exists between them, check out the video below.

Now, let us move on and look at the features you will find in both these cameras we are comparing today.

Articulating Screen

The screens of these cameras are articulating, which means they can be tilted to certain angles in order to allow the photographer shoot from flexible positions.

The EOS M3’s screen can be tilted up to 180 degrees upward and 45 degrees downward, while that of the EOS M100 can only be tilted up to 180 degrees.

What this means for you, the photographer is easy and efficient shooting from high and low angles.

In addition to that, you will also be able to take selfies with your camera – whichever one you go for – thanks to the flexible screen they each come with.

One interesting thing about being able to take selfies with any of these cameras is that they each come with a Self Portrait Mode, which will make your selfies come out nice and sharp.

Face Detection Focus

This feature is what will be responsible for getting you really great looking portrait photos.

As you probably can deduce from the name, this feature helps identify the human faces in the camera’s frame, and focuses on them so that it captures every detail and produces a great image.

And if you notice, we said faces, so, even in group photographs, face detection will still be making sure all the faces come out bright and sharp.

Built-In Flash

Shooting in low light can be real trouble. But with this feature, your troubles are solved in a flash (get it?).

With the built-in flash, you will be able to get pretty bright photos even when the lighting in the area is below par.

HDMI Output

When you have to project images on your camera to a much larger screen, using an HDMI cable is the easiest way to go about it.

These cameras – Canon EOS M3 vs M100 – each allow you connect an HDMI cable so that you don’t have to go through the longer route of first transferring the images to a laptop.

Touch Screen

Here is another way these cameras make life easy for you – in operation.

These cameras are made primarily for beginners, so, a touch sensitive LCD screen is a more than welcome feature.

In trying to get used to the camera, an amateur photographer would appreciate being able to operate it like they would their regular smartphone.

This, of course, might not be much of a big deal for professional photographers who already know their way around a camera, but for the newbies, it’s surely really good news.

Built-In Wi-Fi

You will be able to send your files from your camera to a mobile device over a wireless connection, thanks to the built-in Wi-Fi feature present in these cameras.

It is easy to use and will save you the hassle of having to use cables or other types of external hardware.

The Wi-Fi feature on these cameras work pretty well. And oh, it gets even better…

Near Field Communication

So, this is a feature that makes it possible for you to connect your camera to your nearby mobile device just by contact.

All you need to do is touch the NFC icons of camera and phone together and you are in.

Of course, first confirm that your device is NFC compatible, because not every smartphone is.

Remote Control

With this, you can use your smartphone as a remote controlling device for your camera.

This feature works with the built-in Wi-Fi, and once that wireless connection has been created, remote control is very easy to achieve.

So, basically, your smartphone becomes your camera’s screen and so, with it, you can shoot, change a few settings, and do a couple other things you would have been able to do with your camera itself.

This would be particularly great for wildlife photography, at times when being physically present at the scene might hamper your chances of capturing the most natural moments.

APS-C Sensor

Your camera’s sensor is pretty important. And to a very large extent, it affects the quality of photos you will be able to get with that camera.

Your camera could have a full frame sensor or an APS-C one. The latter – which is what you get with both these cameras – is basically a cropped version of the earlier.

But well, that doesn’t mean it is an inferior kind. As a matter of fact, cameras with such sensors are better for shooting when the object is far away from the lens.

More specifically, each of these cameras offer you a pretty impressive 24 mega pixels in maximum sensor resolution.

What this means is that images taken with these will be containing a lot of details and pretty big prints. This is surely good news for any photographer.

RAW Support

Here is another reason why you can be sure about good quality photos from any one of these cameras.

They each come with this feature – RAW support – which means that you can take photos without tampering with their quality.

Normally, a picture which is compressed to the JPEG format to maximize storage space loses some details.

But here, you are presented with cameras which allow you decide whether or not you want to compress your images at any time.

This, coupled with the 24 mega pixel maximum sensor resolution, will be producing sharp, high quality photos, for sure.

The only problem you might encounter would be storage space, because images in the RAW format are usually really large files.

Also, taking RAW format images in burst mode might be very hectic – we will be talking about this later in this article.

Unique Features – Canon EOS M3 vs M100

The following features distinguish the Canon EOS M3 from the M100:

i. External flash hot shoe

ii. Bluetooth

iii. Video stabilization

iv. External microphone jack

v. Time-lapse

vi. Auto exposure bracketing

External Flash Hot Shoe

Yes, each of these cameras comes with a built-in flash, but that flash will not always give you the best of images in low light.

But with an external flash, you can get much better results. And well, it goes without saying that an external flash hot shoe is the indication that an external flash can be used on that camera.

So, if you will be doing a lot of flash photography, obviously you are better off with the camera that allows you use an external flash, which is the Canon EOS M3.

Bluetooth

You surely already know what Bluetooth does for your mobile devices. Well, it is no different with cameras.

In addition to the built-in Wi-Fi that these cameras come with, the EOS M100 is the only one of the two that goes further with connectivity, coming with a built-in Bluetooth.

One advantage you get with this is being able to wirelessly transfer files even when your camera’s battery is low (Wi-Fi doesn’t let you do that).

Also, you are able to connect to more devices than with just the built-in Wi-Fi.

Video Stabilization

If we are to make an argument for the EOS M100 in the area of video recording, this would be the main angle we would come from.

Although both these cameras – Canon EOS M3 vs M100 – have the same video resolution (1920 by 1080), the EOS M100 is the only one of the two that will be giving you great results even when you record without a stand.

Video stabilization is the feature that ensures that the shakes and little movements of your camera while you record do not cause damage to the quality of videos you get.

And remember that this camera’s LCD screen is a flexible one. You can literally be flexible with your movements and shooting positions, and isn’t that just really good news?!

External Microphone Jack

Now, it will be hard to just name the EOS M100 the better camera for recording videos, because the EOS M3 does give you something you can’t get with the earlier.

That something is the external microphone jack.

The EOS M3’s internal microphone does pretty well. However, the results you get might not be so excellent when you have to record in a very noisy environment.

But just by getting a good external microphone and connecting it to your camera via this port, you have pretty much solved this problem.

So, even without video stabilization nor a very fast focusing system, the EOS M3 is one that could still be considered for video. Especially if you won’t be moving a lot while you record.

Good audio quality, flexible screen, 1920 by 1080 video resolution; not bad at all for recording, you know.

Time-Lapse

Still on video recording – the EOS M100 allows you get a little creative while you record. How? Well, with the help of time-lapse.

This feature basically helps you manipulate time in your recordings. So, you could literally record for hours, and then compress the video so it is only a few minutes long.

It’s like watching the video on fast forward, but not really.

This feature is particularly useful for nature photography.

Those 5 to 10 minute videos of the sun rising, or a plant blooming, took hours to actually happen.

But time-lapse made it possible to watch them and get the entire point of the phenomenon in just a few minutes. Pretty awesome, isn’t it?

Auto Exposure Bracketing

If you shoot in difficult lighting conditions very often, the truth is a flash will not always save you.

There are a few other features on your camera that could be useful, and auto exposure bracketing is one of them.

This feature allows you take a number of photos (usually 3) with just one click of the shutter button. The catch is that each of those photos will be in different exposure settings.

Compared to altering the settings manually after every shot, allowing your camera do that automatically is obviously more convenient.

Well, this convenience is one thing you will only be able to get with the EOS M3, as this feature is not present in the M100.

Therefore, if you have an interest in HDR photography, your obvious choice of the two would be the Canon EOS M3.

Unique Pros – Canon EOS M3 vs M100

Unique Pros Of The Canon EOS M3 – Canon EOS M3 vs M100

Which is Better for Flash Photography: Canon EOS M3 or M100?

The Canon EOS M3 is better for flash photography, thanks to its hot shoe that allows photographers to mount on an external flash on it. This feature is not available in the M100, so flash photography is not one of its strong points.

Which is Good for HDR Photography: Canon EOS M3 or M100?

For a good and efficient HDR photography, auto exposure bracketing is necessary in a camera and only the M3 has it.

This is basically the reason we would easily recommend the EOS M3 to you if your main need for a camera would be to get lovely high dynamic range photos.

Which has a Better Audio Quality: Canon EOS M3 or M100?

With the internal microphone of the M3, it produces better audio quality than the M100.

But you cannot always bank on the internal microphone of any camera, no matter how good it is. Especially when you always have to shoot outdoors or in noisy places.

So, this camera giving you the option of using an external microphone to improve on the sound quality you can get from the camera is definitely a good move.

Even better when you consider that there’s always room for improvement, as you can keep getting better external microphones to use on that one camera.

Meanwhile the quality you get from the internal microphone will not improve beyond what you had when you first purchased it.

Which Offers a Larger JPEG Buffer: Canon EOS M3 or M100?

When it comes to JPEG buffer, the EOS M3 offers an unlimited number of shots when shooting on burst mode, while the M100 offers just above a hundred shots.

Shooting on burst mode is something you cannot really do without if your brand of photography involves a lot of motion and movement.

Your best shot at getting the best photos of people or things in motion is by repeatedly taking photos in quick succession. And burst mode is what helps you achieve that.

Now, there are a number of things to check out before concluding that a camera is good for burst mode shooting.

One of those is the buffer of the camera.

While you take those continuous shots, they are temporarily held up somewhere so that the shoot stays undisturbed. That temporary storage is the buffer.

When the buffer gets full, the continuous shooting would be halted so that the camera can empty its buffer by transferring the files to where they will be permanently stored.

Now, the larger your camera’s buffer, the more photos it is able to hold per time, and consequently, the longer you are able to go on shooting without disturbance.

One more thing worthy of note is that a camera’s buffer will always fill up faster when shooting in the RAW format compared to when you are taking JPEG shots.

And the obvious reason is that RAW files are usually a lot larger (and thus take up more storage space) than JPEG ones.

What this means is that you can literally just go on and on shooting JPEG on burst mode with this camera without any disturbance. Isn’t that just amazing?!

Unique Pros Of The Canon EOS M100 – Canon EOS M3 vs M100

Which Offers a Better Wireless Connectivity Option: Canon EOS M3 or M100?

Since the M100 comes with a Bluetooth feature, while the M3 does not, it is better for wireless connections.

Therefore, you can wirelessly more conveniently connect to more devices with the EOS M100 than with the M3.

Which Produces More Stabilized Videos: Canon EOS M3 or M100?

With the image stabilization technology of the M100, it is able to produce more stabilized videos than the M3. The videos produced by the M100 will still look sharp, even if the camera intentionally or unintentionally moved while recording.

This is particularly great for you if your brand of photography requires that you often record videos while on the move.

Which is Better for Creative Shooting: Canon EOS M3 or M100?

Thanks to the in-camera feature that allows photographers create time-lapse videos, they can now get a little more creative when shooting with the EOS M100, unlike with the M3.

Unique Cons – Canon EOS M3 vs M100

Unique Cons Of The Canon EOS M3 – Canon EOS M3 vs M100

The following are the disadvantages of choosing the Canon EOS M3 over the M100:

i. No Built-in Bluetooth

ii. No video stabilization mode

iii. No time-lapse mode

No Built-In Bluetooth

With the EOS M3, you will be missing out on all the many conveniences that Bluetooth offers when it comes to connectivity.

Well, this might not be so much of a big deal because you still have the built-in Wi-Fi to fall back on.

No Video Stabilization Mode

The lack of this feature will only affect you if you will be doing a lot of video recording.

If you will be using your camera strictly for still photography, then you can overlook this.

However, if you are the motion picture type of photographer, then this might be something to consider.

There are solutions, though; the most popular of them being stands. You just need to make sure that your camera doesn’t shake nor move while you record with it.

That way, you wouldn’t even need a stabilizer at all.

 No Time-lapse Mode

Unlike the EOS M100, the M3 does not allow you record time-lapse videos. This is surely not the most appeasing news for nature and wildlife photographers.

Unique Cons Of The Canon EOS M100 – Canon EOS M3 vs M100

The following are the disadvantages of choosing the Canon EOS M100 over the M3:

i. No external flash hot shoe

ii. No auto exposure bracketing mode

iii. No external microphone jack

No External Flash Hot Shoe

With the EOS M100, lighting from the camera is limited to whatever the built-in flash can offer, which is not always enough.

Because you can’t use an external flash with this camera, we won’t recommend this one for flash photography.

No Auto Exposure Bracketing

Because of the lack of this feature in the EOS M100, it might not be your best bet for HDR photography.

Also, taking photos in difficult lighting conditions might actually be difficult if you are using this camera.

No External Microphone Jack

With this camera, you will have to be fully dependent on the internal microphone for sound, because it does not allow you connect external microphones.

Although the internal microphone does pretty well on its own, you will sometimes wish you could use an external microphone, especially when you have to record in a noisy place.

Common Pros – Canon EOS M3 vs M100

Common Cons – Canon EOS M3 vs M100

 Canon EOS M3Canon EOS M100
No viewfinderMost mirrorless cameras feature electronic viewfinders, but not this one.An electronic viewfinder would normally give you a digital image of what the camera’s lens is viewing, making it easy for you to preview and frame photos. But without that on this camera, you would have to use the LCD screen to frame and preview, which is hardly convenient, especially when the sun is out. This camera also does not come with an electronic viewfinder. The only advantage of this is that it makes the camera more compact and lightweight.
No image stabilizationNo image stabilization means that if this camera shakes while you shoot with it, pictures will come out looking blurry and of low quality. This also does not come with image stabilization, but the built-in video stabilizer it comes with sort of makes up for that, doesn’t it?
No built-in GPSThis means that you will not be able to geo-tag photos with this camera. You will not be able to track the location at which photos were taken with this camera, too.
No top side LCD displayThis camera does not come with that little screen that helps you easily monitor settings being made.Same as the Canon EOS M3.
No panoramaYou don’t get to stitch photos together to make one panoramic one with this camera. Also no panorama with this one.
No slow motionYou won’t be able to record videos in slow motion with this one.Same as the EOS M3.
No headphone jackHeadphones are usually used to regulate audio while you record, but you cannot use those with this camera. You also cannot use headphones with this camera.
No weather sealingIf you would be using this camera a lot outdoors, then you would have to be careful of the weather conditions.Without a weather sealing, this camera could get damaged if weather elements got into the body. This one also does not have a weather sealing; risky to use in harsh weather conditions, too.
Slow burst modeIf you will be shooting objects in motion, you would like a camera with a really fast burst mode speed to increase your chances of getting really amazing photos. But at 4.2 frames per second, the burst mode of this camera is anything but fast.At 6.1 frames per second, this camera’s burst mode is a bit faster than that of the EOS M3, but that, too, is pretty unimpressive speed.
Poor battery life250 shots per full charge is an abysmal performance for a battery of even a mirrorless camera.Although slightly better than that of the EOS M3, the battery of this camera, at 295 shots per full charge, could still have been a lot better.

What Do People Think About Both Cameras – Canon EOS M3 vs M100?

Canon EOS M3Canon EOS M100
Photographers seem to like the build of this camera. They say it is compact and has a pretty good grip.Customers have had a lot of good things to say about the portability and compactness of this camera.
Other things that many customers seem to really love about this one are the low noise, the sharpness, and the fact that it does not produce moire.People say this camera is really easy to use. And that it is just the right camera to use if you are transitioning from smartphone photography.
Customers have complained about the menu layout of this camera. And of course, while everybody was impressed by the buffer that holds up an unlimited number of JPEG shots, nobody seemed very impressed by the number of RAW shots it can hold per time (4).People seem to have issues with the lack of an electronic viewfinder, lack of an external flash hot shoe, and lack of auto exposure bracketing. Many said they didn’t really expect a weather sealed body, being that this is only an entry-level camera.
Basically, people appear to be pretty satisfied with the EOS M3.They don’t really fancy the lack of a viewfinder and lack of image stabilization, but they would recommend for amateur photography anyway. This is a camera many have said is good for amateur photography. And in spite of the few flaws, customers seem to be pretty fond of this one.

Our Take – Canon EOS M3 vs M100

Canon EOS M3Canon EOS M100
We love that this camera is compact and very functional at the same time. It is great in low light and can give you awesome sound quality. This is a pretty good choice to learn photography with. It is user-friendly, compact, and will fit just right into your budget.
The buffer of this camera makes one happy and mad at the same time. If you are shooting JPEG, awesome. But while shooting RAW this buffer could make you cry.Buffer aside, burst mode shooting with this camera might be annoying; because of the speed, obviously. We love that this camera comes with a built-in stabilizer, but no external flash hot shoe really does limit its low light performance. The lack of a microphone jack and viewfinder are pretty disappointing, too.
We would recommend this one for flash photography, vlogging, HDR photography, events, and other brands of amateur photography. We would recommend this for video, nature photography, vlogging, events, and beginner photography in general.

Canon EOS M3 vs M100 — FAQs

Are Mirrorless Cameras Sharper than DSLR?

Mirrorless cameras have more autofocus systems than DSLRs, so they tend to be sharper. Most of the light passing through the lens of a DSLR is reflected by the camera’s mirror through the viewfinder. A small amount of light deflected towards an autofocus system in a process known as phase detection autofocus system. This helps the camera in detecting moving bodies under its field-of-view.

Another reason why mirrorless cameras are sharper than DSLRs is because they are designed for manual focus lenses. This is made possible by the power of a tool known as focus peaking.

How Do I Turn on Image Stabilization on Canon?

To turn on image stabilization mode on a Canon camera with an EF-M lens, click the Menu tab to show the menu interface. Under the Camera icon, select Image Stabilizer and enable it. Next, click on the Menu button again and enable the Image Stabilizer Lens. This enables other lenses apart from the EF-M.

Note that the Image Stabilizer is not designed to correct subject blurring, which happens when the subject is in motion at the moment of exposure. For bulb exposures, the Image Stabilization mode should be put off.

How Does Canon Image Stabilization Work?

Image stabilization in a Canon digital camera is controlled by some elements in the lens. These elements are put into motion by an inbuilt microcomputer, which works by when the camera is shaken. As the image stabilization mode is switched on, the lens, which is usually closed if it is inactive, is opened and two gyro sensors are able to detect the angle and speed of the camera’s movement.

The data derived from the detection is transmitted to the microcomputer, which evaluates it and sends instructions to the lens.

Which Canon Camera is Best for Vlogging

The Powershot G7 X Mark III is the best Canon camera for vlogging. Its compact body is fitted with a 1.5-inch sensor, which is about 4 times larger than the sensor of iPhone 11. So, its vlogging capabilities is second to none. The device is designed with an intuitive control system that just about anyone can operate.

When it comes to connectivity, the Canon Powershot G7 X Mark III does not disappoint. It is equipped with NFC, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and USB ports.

Which is Better: EOS or DSLR?

A Canon EOS camera is better than a DSLR because it is both a DSLR and film camera. EOS is an acronym for Electro-Optical System, which was introduced when Canon incorporated the autofocus mode in their SLRs. The major advantage DSLRs have over EOS cameras is their superior battery life. An entry-level DSLR camera can take over 300 shots per full charge.

The best and most affordable Canon EOS cameras include Canon EOS Rebel XSi, Canon EOS Rebel XS and Canon EOS Rebel T1i.

Why is Canon More Expensive than Nikon?

Canon cameras are usually more expensive than Nikon’s because Canon is the leader in the camera market, while Nikon comes second place. Most Nikon cameras are more sophisticated than Canon’s, but they are unable to edge out Canon because they were not the pioneers of the digital camera market.

On the flip side, Nikon lenses are more expensive than Canon’s because they make optical lenses rather than the conventional lens made by Canon. Overall, Canon is more expensive because the prices of their cameras cover the little difference of Nikon lenses.
