Comparison Overview — Canon EOS M3 Vs M6

So, we have already mentioned that these cameras are made by the same company; which is pretty obvious. But what makes them even more similar is that they belong in the same series – the Canon EOS M series.

As a matter of fact, the EOS M6 was announced as a replacement for the EOS M3 in February of 2017, while the EOS M3 itself was announced exactly 2 years earlier in February of 2015.

Now, being made as a replacement for the EOS M3, it is expected that the EOS M6 performs better than its predecessor in every way. But that is not the situation.

Yes, there were a lot of improvements in the EOS M6, but the EOS M3 still edges the 2017 camera in a couple of areas.

One of those areas is weight. The EOS M3 weighs less than the EOS M6, and who does not love a really lightweight camera?

In addition to that, the M3 has an amazing JPEG buffer, one which is by far better than that of the M6. This is really good news for you if you will be doing a lot of continuous shooting.

But well, speaking of continuous shooting, the burst mode of the EOS M6 is more than twice as fast as that of the M3. This, to some extent, does make up for the camera’s poor JPEG buffer.

Furthermore, the capacity of the Canon EOS M6’s battery is better than that of its counterpart, even though not by so much.

Price/Value Ratio — Canon EOS M3 vs M6

Which Offers More Value for Money: Canon EOS M3 vs M6?

The Canon EOS M6 has a better price-value ratio than M3. It is more affordable, and it still comes with more interesting features than the EOS M3. In terms of Bluetooth connectivity, file transfer, time-lapse and video stabilization, the M6 outshines the M3.

Anyway, if you want to make a quick decision, this section, along with the comparison table, and “which is best under what circumstance?” sections will help you do just that. Let us get straight to it.

Common Features — Canon EOS M3 Vs M6

The Canon EOS M3 and M6 have the following features in common:

i. Mirrorless camera

ii. Articulating screen

iii. Touch screen

iv. In-built flash

v. External flash hot shoe

vi. Face detection focus

vii. RAW support

viii. Auto exposure bracketing

ix. Wi-Fi & Near Field Communication (NFC)

x. Microphone jack

ix. HDMI output

Mirrorless Camera

These cameras being mirrorless means that neither of them comes with an optical viewfinder; because that is a feature entirely exclusive to Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras.

However, what you get with mirrorless cameras is the electronic viewfinder.

An electronic viewfinder is a feature (exclusive to mirrorless cameras) that shows you a digital image of what your camera’s lens is capturing.

In addition to that, the electronic viewfinder shows you some additional information – like the battery level and histogram – and then it allows you frame your images while you shoot.

Well, it is important to note that there are mirrorless cameras that do not come with electronic viewfinders.

While some of such mirrorless cameras give you an option of attaching an external viewfinder, some others do not let you do that.

In cases like the latter, you are left to shoot using just the LCD screen. This is cool, but not very much so when you have to shoot outdoors when the sun is really bright.

Anyway, a camera without an electronic viewfinder is still very much a mirrorless camera – provided it does not come with an optical viewfinder.

The absence of the optical viewfinder – and not the presence of an electronic viewfinder – is the major indicator that the camera is a mirrorless one.

Articulating Screen

An articulating screen is a type of LCD screen that is flexible and can rotate to different angles. The angle to which it can rotate is different with cameras.

Now, each of these cameras in comparison – Canon EOS M3 vs M6 – has a screen that tilts 180 degrees upward and 45 degrees downward.

Being able to tilt 180 degrees upward, the articulating screens of these cameras are ideal to take self portraits with, and also for making vlogging videos.

And because of its ability to tilt 45 degrees downward, the articulating screen is fantastic to take overhead shots with.

Generally, an articulating screen is a really big plus to your camera. It makes it a lot more convenient for you to take shots from really difficult angles.

Overhead shots, chest-level shots, self portraits, are things that would be impossible to achieve without an articulating screen. So, this feature is indeed a big plus in each of these cameras.

Touch Screen

In addition to being articulating, the LCD screen of each of these cameras – Canon EOS M3 vs M6 – is touch sensitive.

You are able to control your camera’s many functions just by tapping on the screen. This offers you much convenience in operating your camera.

And seeing as virtually every device in this era is touch screen, it is only fair that our cameras follow suit.

In-Built Flash

As a photographer, you won’t always have the luxury of fantastic lighting in the shooting location.

For example, if you are an events photographer, you have little influence over the lighting in the hall (or worse still, if it is an outdoor event).

At such times, your camera’s in-built flash becomes a pretty important feature. With it, you can always improve on the brightness of your images without much hassle.

External Flash Hot Shoe

Now, if at the event, you are not loving the results you are getting from your camera’s in-built flash, there is yet another option available to you – an external flash.

And of course, you can only use an external flash if your camera supports it.

And seeing as each of these cameras – Canon EOS M3 vs M6 – comes with an external flash hot shoe, it means that you are able to mount an external flash, if you so desire.

With an external flash, you can improve the brightness of your images – even further than what you get with an in-built flash.

So, while your camera’s in-built flash is designed to provide your camera with good enough lighting, the external flash hot shoe feature is designed so that you can get even better lighting with the use of an external flash.

Face Detection Focus

So, let’s say you are still at the event where you are the photographer, and you have to take a couple of portrait photos of the attendees.

This feature right here is what will give you premium portrait photographs. Why? Because it has the ability to detect and focus on the human faces in your camera’s frame.

With this, you can blur the background and focus on nothing else but the face, which is the most important thing in a portrait photo, isn’t it?

RAW Support

So, still at this hypothetical event, where you are the hypothetical photographer. And, of course you were hired by the hypothetical hosts (okay, this is the last hypothetical, lol).

Surely, these people want the best of images from you – perhaps they want to make a documentary out of it, you never know.

Well, if you are shooting with either of these cameras – Canon EOS M3 vs M6 – you won’t be worried about delivering those high-quality images.

And this is because both these cameras have RAW support. What this means is that you can take pictures with these cameras and have them stored in their uncompressed format – RAW.

The RAW format is literally the highest quality format made available in cameras. And both of these cameras allow you have your images in that format.

While JPEG compresses the images to make them smaller and, thus, take up little storage space, RAW does not compress images. So, with this, you won’t be losing any detail on your image.

Well, you obviously cannot have your cake and eat it. Though the RAW format gives you really amazing, high-quality, images, they are usually really “heavy”.

Images in RAW occupy a lot of storage space, and this is one reason why your camera’s buffer fills up faster when you are shooting RAW compared to when you are shooting JPEG.

We will be discussing more on this (buffer) as we move further in this Canon EOS M3 vs M6 comparison article.

Auto Exposure Bracketing

This is one really lovely feature that offers you a wealth of convenience as a photographer.

So now, still on the assumption that you are a photographer at an event, let us further assume that it is an outdoor event and that lighting conditions are not so great.

Now, if you want to take a photo of the chairman of the occasion giving a speech, and you are not exactly sure what exposure setting will give you the best image results, this is the feature that will most likely save the day.

The auto-exposure bracketing allows you to take one shot and get that image in 3 or more different exposure settings. So, you can then go ahead to decide which one best satisfies you.

This is a pretty easy feature to use and it makes shooting really convenient for you.

Anyway, if you want to find out more about the auto exposure bracketing feature, and how to use it on your camera, check out this video below.

Wi-Fi & Near Field Communication (NFC)

You probably have one or more devices that are Wi-Fi enabled, therefore, even if you have never held a camera before, this feature is surely not new to you.

Well, remember you are still a photographer at a big event, and you are using one of these cameras in comparison today – Canon EOS M3 vs M6.

Now, your hosts might want to project some of the images from the event on the screen while the event is going on.

This, therefore, means that you will have to make quick transfers to whoever will be projecting those images for you.

Your best bet for the fastest transfer is surely via a wireless connection. So, you can very easily just connect your camera to a nearby compatible device, and do an easy transfer of files, and everyone is happy.

Guess what, it gets even better. Each of these cameras – Canon EOS M3 vs M6 – comes with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.

This technology helps you connect your camera to your device with only one touch.

You literally just have to, with your device, touch the Near Field Communication icon on your camera, and you are connected.

So, in no time, your device is connected to your camera, and you can do all the transfers you want really conveniently. Does it even get better with these features?

Well, yeah, apparently, it does. By connecting your camera to your smartphone via Wi-Fi, you are able to use it as your camera’s screen.

And consequently, you can initiate a smartphone remote controlled shoot. What this means is that you can use your smartphone to shoot while your camera is meters away.

Anyway, if you want to know how to use these features, and thus, enjoy all the many advantages they offer, the video below should help.

The video shows you how you can connect the Canon EOS M3 to a nearby iPhone, and also tells you what to do thereafter. Check it out!

Microphone Jack

So, while you are taking photos at the event, you might also need to conduct a couple of interviews for proper documentation, as a professional that you are, you know, lol.

And there is a high probability that you won’t be able to find a quiet environment to record your videos.

This, therefore, means that it won’t be advisable to record using the camera’s internal microphone.

Well, with any one of these cameras – Canon EOS M3 vs M6 – you can improve the audio quality of your recordings with the help of an external microphone.

All you have to do is connect an external microphone using the microphone jack and get audio quality that is far better than what you would have gotten with the internal mic.

So, yet again, because of the features that each of these cameras – Canon EOS M3 vs M6 – come with, you will be doing a great job and delivering amazing results.

HDMI Output

With this, at the end of a successful day of photography, you can connect your camera to a big screen using an HDMI cord, and view your photos and videos on a much larger display than what your camera offers.

Unique Features — Canon EOS M3 Vs M6

The following are features that distinguishes the Canon EOS M3 from the M6:

i. Bluetooth

ii. Time-lapse

Bluetooth

Bluetooth allows you to expand the wireless connectivity of your camera beyond the in-built Wi-Fi.  This gives you more flexibility.

You can transfer files via Bluetooth to devices that are not Wi-Fi enabled but have Bluetooth.

Also, when your camera’s battery gets really low, you won’t be able to use the Wi-Fi feature.

This means that your only option to initiate a wireless transfer would be via Bluetooth. Well, of these 2 cameras – Canon EOS M3 vs M6 – this feature is available in only the EOS M6.

Time-Lapse

This is a feature that allows you manipulate time a little. So, you can take a 5 hour video and with time-lapse, get the video cut down to, say, 10 minutes.

If you do not have an idea what a time-lapse video is, check out this one of a spider web build below.

PS: this feature is available only on the Canon EOS M6.

Unique Pros — Canon EOS M3 Vs M6

Unique Pros Of The Canon EOS M3

Which has a Larger JPEG Buffer: M3 or M6?

The Canon EOS M3 has a larger than the M6. It comes with a buffer that can accommodate an unlimited number of shots per time while shooting JPEG on burst mode.

So, if a photographer is shooting on burst mode, one of the things that would determine whether or not they’d have a smooth and undisturbed continuous shooting is the camera’s buffer.

Now, the buffer is where images are stored in the camera – while shooting on burst mode – before they are transferred to the external storage.

If you have a very small buffer, it will fill up easily, and thus, your camera will have to pause your continuous shooting, so that it can empty its buffer.

This can make you miss very important moments in the race, because your camera will be disrupting the continuous shooting a little too frequently.

However, like you might already have figured out, a large buffer allows you go longer periods without having to take that pause.

This is because your camera’s buffer can hold up more shots while shooting in burst mode before having to compulsorily empty it.

And well, with a buffer that can take an unlimited number of JPEG shots per time, you literally will not have to take any pause with the Canon EOS M3.

Unique Pros Of The Canon EOS M6

Which Offers Video Stabilization: M3 or M6?

The M6 offer video stabilization while the M3 does not. So, videographers will find the former more useful than the latter.

So, at this event where you are the photographer, it might be necessary for you to make video recordings now and then. While making those recordings, your Canon EOS M6 might shake a couple of times in your hand.

Those shakes would most likely affect your videos and make them look unprofessional. That’s definitely not good.

But seeing as this camera comes with the video stabilization feature, the effects of those shakes won’t be so evident in the videos. Now, this is good!

Which Offers Time-Lapse: M3 or M6?

Between both cameras, only the M6 offers time-lapse, which allows photographers to be more creative during shoots.

This is really something you would enjoy using in your Canon EOS M6.

Which has Bluetooth: M3 or M6?

The Canon M6 camera comes with a Bluetooth feature, unlike the M6. With the Bluetooth, users can now connect to devices that are not Wi-Fi enabled, but have Bluetooth.

This makes it possible for you to do a wireless transfer of files to even more devices, with just about the same convenience.

Which Transfers Files Faster: M3 or M6?

The M6 transfer files faster than the M3. It supports ultra high speed (UHS) memory cards which means that files can be transferred from it camera to an external storage device in super fast speeds.

Unique Cons — Canon EOS M3 Vs M6

Unique Cons Of The Canon EOS M3

The following are the disadvantages of using the Canon EOS M3:

i. No Bluetooth

ii. Does not support Ultra High Speed (UHS) Memory Cards

iii. No video stabilization mode

iv. No time-lapse

No Bluetooth

This camera does not come with in-built Bluetooth, which means that you will not be getting all the convenience and advantages that Bluetooth offers to devices.

Does Not Support Ultra High Speed (UHS) Memory Cards

The Canon EOS M3 does not allow you to use ultra high speed (UHS) memory cards. Therefore, you will be left with no other option than to use regular memory cards with their regular transfer speeds.

No Video Stabilization

When recording videos with this camera, if the camera shakes, the effects of those shakes would be very evident in your videos because it does not come with video stabilization.

No Time-Lapse

You, unfortunately, will not be able to make beautiful time-lapse videos with the Canon EOS M3.

Unique Cons Of The Canon EOS M6

What is the Disadvantage of Using the M6?

The M6 camera has a buffer that can take only 27 shots at a time. This means that after taking only 27 JPEG shots in burst mode, it will have to halt the continuous shooting in order to empty its buffer.

27 shots really mean that you will be taking very frequent pauses in between your burst mode shooting, which is really not something you would want.

It makes it even worse when you compare the buffer of the Canon EOS M3 vs M6 – unlimited vs 27 shots. This shows you just how unimpressive this camera’s buffer is.

Common Pros — Canon EOS M3 Vs M6

Canon EOS M3

Common Cons — Canon EOS M3 Vs M6

Canon EOS M3

Canon EOS M6

No Electronic ViewfinderIn this Canon EOS M3 vs M6 comparison article, we have shown you how useful the electronic viewfinder is, and it is pretty sad that this camera does not come with one.As a matter of fact, if the event you are supposed to take pictures at is an outdoor event and the sun decided to smile down that day, you would really be wishing the Canon EOS M3 had a viewfinder. And that is simply because the LCD screen will be largely affected by the sun, and it might, therefore, be impossible for you to take great shots with it.Well, there is a little bit of respite – this camera allows you connect an external viewfinder. So, though you might not be happy about the absence of a viewfinder, you can still get good enough results by attaching an external one.Same as the Canon EOS M3.
No Weather SealingSo, while you are taking those photos at the outdoor event, if the weather begins to act funny, it would be really risky for you to have your camera out. And this is because the Canon EOS M3 has no weather sealing.Weather sealing is what makes your camera safe to be used anywhere, whatever the condition of the weather is. Therefore, if your camera – like the Canon EOS M3 – does not have this sealing, and you use it in tough weather conditions, you might be causing a lot of damage to it.Same as the Canon EOS M3.
No Image StabilizationWhile you take photos at the event, your camera might shake a couple of times, and if it does, the effects surely will be evident in your photos. And since the Canon EOS M3 does not have the image stabilization feature, those effects won’t be erased or anything.Same as the Canon EOS M3. However, the Canon EOS M6 comes with video stabilization which is a little atonement.
No Headphone JackA headphone jack helps you connect headphones to your camera. And with them, you can regulate the audio you get while you record. Well, you won’t be able to do that with the Canon EOS M3 because it does not allow you connect headphones.Same as the Canon EOS M3.
No Panorama FeatureThe Canon EOS M3 does not have the panorama feature, which means that it won’t be able to string images together to make one beautiful panoramic photo.Same as the Canon EOS M3.
No GPSYou won’t be able to geo-tag your photos or videos with this camera.Same as the Canon EOS M3.
No Slow MotionYou won’t be able to bring whatever fantastic slow motion video ideas you have to reality with this camera. Same as the Canon EOS M3.
No Dual Memory Card SlotThis camera provides you with just one memory card slot.Same as the Canon EOS M3.
Poor BatteryYou will be able to get only about 250 shots per full charge of the Canon EOS M3’s battery, which is quite unimpressive. So, at the event you are supposed to cover, you would have to take extra batteries, because the battery of this camera won’t be alive for too long.Same as the Canon EOS M3. However, the battery of the Canon EOS M6 is a bit better – 295 shots per full charge – but is still unimpressive.
Slow Burst Mode SpeedWhile taking photos in burst mode, the speed is pretty much the most important thing. You would not want to miss anything while you do your continuous shooting. But with 4.2 frames per second, you surely will be missing a lot, because this is slow. Same as the Canon EOS M3. However, the speed of the Canon EOS M6’s burst mode is more than twice that of the EOS M3. Anyway, 9 frames per second is only average, at best. Definitely not close to being the fastest out there.

Our Take On The Canon EOS M3 Vs M6

Canon EOS M3

Canon EOS M6

We have not been able to decide what we love most about the Canon EOS M3. The unlimited JPEG buffer, the smartphone remote control function, or its really light weight.Well, all 3 are pretty great, and they make this camera even more loveable.Favorite thing about the Canon EOS M6 camera has to be the video stabilization feature. Imagine being able to get smooth flowing images without a tripod or anything like that. That is just absolutely amazing.
We actually do not mind the absence of an electronic viewfinder. You can always get an external viewfinder if you really need one, so, that should not be much of a problem. What we do have problems with are the battery capacity and the burst mode speed. They really could have been better, and we did expect more from Canon in these aspects. We don’t mind the absence of a viewfinder in this camera, too. The burst mode speed isn’t so terrible, but it could have been better. The battery, however, is nothing to write home about. We wanted better!
This is a lovely camera. It is easy to use and produces great results. This is a really amazing camera – probably the better one. With this you get Bluetooth, time-lapse recording, video stabilization, and a lot more, all for a fair enough price. So, yes, we love what Canon did with this camera. Big ups to Canon!

Can Old Canon Lens be used on DSLR?

An old Canon EF lens produced from 1987 can be used on any Canon DSLR camera. However, FD lenses produced prior to 1987 are not compatible with Canon DSLR cameras. For an old EF lens to work seamlessly on a DSLR camera, ensure that the electrical contacts, which are joined at the back, are kept clean, otherwise the camera may malfunction.

Bear in mind that old lenses tend to zoom in more than normal when fitted into DSLRs. Real estate and landscape photographers will not find the phenomenon funny because they need wide-angle lenses.

Are Canon FD Lenses Any Good?

Canon FD lenses are good enough to be used by most magazines, ad agencies and professional photographers, who have been using them since 1887. Canon FD lenses improve the image quality that even the best photographers cannot do without.

Also, considering the pocket-friendly prices and quality of most Canon FD lenses, customers feel its too good to be true. The best FD lenses photographers can lay their hands on include the 28mm f2.0, 24mm f2.0, 20mm f2.8, 50mm f3.5, 85mm f1.8 and 100mm f2.0.

How do You Change the Shutter Speed on a Canon M3?

To manually change the shutter speed on a Canon EOS M3 device, align the dial mode with the AE mode. This action allows users to adjust the shutter speed by simply turning the dial close to the shutter button.

Although under normal circumstances during shoots, photographers pay less attention to the shutter speed of their cameras, it is a great way of creating beautiful effects as though time is moving at a slower pace, or taking dynamic shots of fleeting moments of a subject.

Why isn’t My Canon Camera Connecting to My Mac?

A Canon camera may fail to connect to a Mac device if it is not done in the right way. To start with, ensure that the USB cable is connected to the Canon camera and the Mac device. Next, check if the camera is switched on and if not, switch it on. After that, set the camera in the mode for importing files, as recommended by the manufacturer.

If it is still unable to connect to the Mac device, check the memory card in the camera for any damage. If the memory card is not the issue, the last resort is to contact the manufacturer.
