Hi all,I have the G7xii and I like it but looking to upgrade to something with better iso handling and longer zoom.I will not buy the Sony RX100 Vii since the aperture is so small when zooming that I couldn't use it for low light performances (I need f/2.8 or better at max zoom).
Am I wrong in my understanding that the G5xii has the same sensor as the G7xii and that there won't be anything to gain from a sensor standpoint? Is there any issue with the slightly longer zoom of the G5xii versus the G7xii? More distortion? Less crisp images? Thanks!Paul

IDK but I am sure any camera you upgrade to will be fine. Have you considered a M camera?

M camera's are mirrorless with interchangeable lenses, right?I need a point and shoot.I go to venues which consider anything with an interchangeable lens as a prohibited "professional" camera.
I also want something I can keep in a big pocket or small belt pack. Thanks

I like responsive cameras that are easy to hold, quickly turn on and off as expected and are not obnoxiously large or noisy. I usually zoom in on things. I usually transfer to Android to edit and post to Instagram. For fun and family and personal. I'll never notice corner sharpness unless I pinch zoom pixel peep when I'm bored. I'm not going to notice the difference between ISO noise at 800 vs 1000. I don't expect much after 1600 or 3200 depending on the scene. I move simple sliders willy nilly as the mood strikes me so one manufactures color science isn't going to sway me too much. All that being said, even though I love my Sony RX10IV and had a few bad Canon experiences in the past, I chose a factory refurbished g5x Mark ii for the extra zoom and comfortable grip. I do not find it lacking in any way. Very happy with it.

was G5X Mk I in your calculations at all? Or was the EVF & flash bump not what you wanted from the discreet perspective?

I wanted the latest chip set. When I'm using a point and shoot I don't need the viewfinder. Feel kinda funny putting a small camera up to my face. Everyone talks about unable to see the screen on sunny days. Ive been shooting in all kinds of conditions for 20 years and that hasn't been a big issue for me. Parallax error in older offset optical Windows was more of an annoyance, but that's another story. Back to the pop up electronic view finder. That was not a selling point to me. Unwanted complexity cost and weight. The quality of it is good though. Easy better than one I had on a Panasonic gx9. But I don't use it either way. Covered the top with black gaffers tape even. Might help keep out dust and lint and moisture.

I bought the Mark II, although it is rather expensive... I don't do video. I bought it to have something really light, so I could always take it with me. It is small and light, fits in a pocket or very small camera bag/pouch, and has a very good grip. An M200 or M50ii would be a better body, but than you have to add lenses, and it is not small anymore.
The G5Xii delivers very good photos, especially in good light. But it does not disappoint indoors. It's a fast camera, AF is good, ergonomics are good. Good old Canon menu. IQ is good (but EOS M are better bodies). Has DIGIC 8 and face detect. Not bad. Perhaps images are a little bit softer, but not that much. Certainly no show-stopper!
I bought it for the external EVF, that was a must for me. I can not see my composition very well on the LCD screen in sunlight. I prefer the pop up viewfinder and use it often. I think it is a good camera, I am very pleased with it. But my M50ii is a better camera than the G5Xii. And my EOS RP is a better camera than the M50ii. But what does that mean: "better". Some things are better. Some things are different. You can add sharper lenses on those EOS bodies. But I like all my cameras. And the G5Xii will give you very good photos.
The G5Xii has a longer focal length. If you are sure you'll never use the external EVF, you can take the G7. Because you would pay for the popup EVF and you don't use it. (And again: that very little grip on the right side of the G5Xii body, is very good......)

thanks. nice to know the popup EVF works well. The little flashes look prone to misadventure but I guess not (not unique to these cameras either).I have a G16 and yes the OVF on that is dinky.

I've used both of these cameras extensively. My "keeper pics" folder has 13,963 G7 X Mark II images and 3,603 for the G5 X Mark II. I am happy I upgraded to the G5 from the G7 overall. My thoughts:
- Image sharpness is very similar.
- High ISO performance is very similar.
- The G5 slightly larger, and doesn't fit as easily in a back pocket of my pants.
- The G5 burst performance is better and it clears the buffer much more quickly. That's handy for action shots (I use these cameras for rock shows).
- The extra reach to 120mm on the G5 is very useful (for me)
- Lightroom doesn't support "Camera Profiles" for the G5, like it does for the G7. I prefer the colors the from Camera Profiles over the Adobe colors. For me, that's the biggest downside of the G5.
- The WiFi feature to transfer images to a phone works better on the G7 when I'm in a crowd full of cell phones, but both are good.
- I sometimes use LibRaw to extract an image that isn't lens-corrected. Both cameras use a lot of corrections, and I don't see much difference between the two.
- I use the Canon app on my phone to sync GPS coordinates to the G5 via Bluetooth. That's nice to have.
The cameras are pretty much identical in other respects for my usage.

Hi David. How are you?
Can you clarify why you have more "keepers" with the G7x but like the G5x better?
I just received my G5xii and I'm torn - at the same focal length the G7x colors and sharpness seem slightly better (for some reason the G5xii also likes to make the images darker than the g7xii at the same focal length). My g5xii makes grays a little more brown than the g7xii.
However, with the extra reach I am able to get more detail at full zoom with the g5xii than with the g7xii at its full zoom (pretty obvious but could make a different since less cropping will help). Thanks!Paul

Oh, it's really simple. I've had the G7xii much longer than the G5xii. I've just had more time to take photos. I wasn't trying to imply that one was better from that perspective -- it's just that I've used both of them extensively.
I agree the extra reach gives a lot more detail, and I really like that about the G5xii!

In reply to Juggernaut122 • Mar 11, 2022 2Good evening Juggernaut,
The G7X II uses a BSI sensor. The G5X II uses a Stacked BSI sensor. Both will perform similarly/identically in terms of actual image quality based off many benchmarks on the Sony Sensor out there. It's the same sensor found in the RX100 IV.
Now, the Stacked CMOS sensor in the G5X II / G7X III does have a faster readout than the G7X Mark II. That means better autofocus and less rolling shutter in video. So there is an improvement on the performance end of things, but not so much in terms of image quality, no loss, but no gain.
Lens, you're trading a small amount of optical quality for a lot of extra reach. See the reviews and scroll down to the imatests here...
https://www.photoreview.com.au/reviews/compact-fixed-lens-cameras/canon-powershot-g7-x-mark-iii/https://www.photoreview.com.au/reviews/compact-fixed-lens-cameras/canon-powershot-g5-x-mark-ii/
Same reviewer, same sensor (comparing the G7X III against the G5X II here), different lens obviously.
I'll say the extra reach is extra reach.
All to say there is merit to the G7X II/III lens being a touch sharper, but it really is a touch. Like less than 100 lines difference in resolution. But, you gain another 20% reach going G5X II. It's definitely a weighted trade where you're gaining more reach than you are loosing in resolution if that makes sense.
The EVF, better grip and arguably better control dial also should be considered.
You're not going to pickup image quality via the newer sensor though, no. Now DIGIC8 is quite a bit more advanced than the DIGIC7 in terms of AWB detection, Noise reduction, exposure/metering and JPEG sharpening if you're a SOOC JPEG shooter, you're going to get better JPEGs on either the G5X II or G7X III vs your G7X II.
Worth it though (for the price)?
I'll say the G7X Mark II got most of the important improvements the G7X mark I needed in AF, RAW performance, grip and slightly better sensor if you're a benchmark checker, PhotonsToPhotons says there is a read noise improvement on the G7X Mark II vs G7X Mark I for some reason, even though both are BSI sensors supposedly.
All to say your G7X II is a winner. Those with a G7X Mark I, would do well to upgrade to the newer Mark II or Mark III, or G5X Mark II. But those like yourself that already have the G7X Mark II? There's less to be gained arguably.
Don't let me stop you from getting the G5X II. Just saying the improvement aren't as large you might think. But, there are improvements, largely in reach, EVF, autofocus/video and DIGIC8/SOOC JPEGs. Weigh those improvements against cost.
I'll say the G5X Mark II is arguably "the" point and shoot on the market. There's days I wish I still had it. The G1X III although clearly a better lens and bigger sensor, less reach. 72mm vs 120mm is a pretty big deal. I use the 24-70 range more though. But, to get the reach, I pretty much gotta drag my M50 II + 55-200 along. G5X II arguably is a better answer as it can pocket.

Mine is a refurb since even Canon doesn't have any new ones - maybe there is a problem with it.It is pretty clear that the color is off for the grays. If I bump the exposure compensation, then the color corrects - very strange.

Hi David,
Okay, I have discovered it is a white balance issue. If I change it to Tungsten then it is perfectly normal. If I leave it on AWB then silvers turn very brown.
I don't know if this is a problem with the AWB or it just can't handle what I am photographing - a silver-grey keyboard.

Yes. As soon as I get a chance to transfer them to my computer.I found an AWB* (with the *) setting that seems to help it choose the correct balance - something about keeping things white in tungsten light, I think.
