Introduction

When it comes to compact cameras, there’s really a massive range of choices available, from affordable to premium, while these type of cameras are one of the most rated camera types out there, because they simplify everything from photography to portability, versatility, and ease-of-use operation.

These types of cameras are being widely used by vloggers, youtubers, travelers, and people who just want a second camera to go with. For this article, we’ve chosen two cameras that are highly-rated, and highly-reviewed on Amazon, while they’ve been a popular option among travelers and vloggers for quite some time now.

Therefore, today, we’re about to see which one has the most features, better functionality, and design. Personally, I’ve been using the Canon Powershot G7 X Mark II a lot, so I’ll make sure to tell you every detail and the slightest differences between this model, and the G9 X Mark II.

I’m really the kind of person who doesn’t take prices seriously, because whenever I wanted to purchase a camera, I would search for the set of features that I was after, and for what kind of use do I need the camera for. The guideline is, there are expensive cameras that lack a specific feature that can be very useful and helpful to you and your job, or hobby, whatever you want to call it.

Okay, now, let’s start with the reviews, and see what these cameras are truly capable of.

Canon G7X Mark II

Canon PowerShot G7X Mark III

This camera is the type of tool which would elevate any creators’ experience to a whole new level. It is versatile, portable, and it produces excellent video quality and amazing photographs in a compact design. If I didn’t make it clear enough, I’m really a fan of compact cameras, and you’re going to find out just why in case you’re new to this or just starting out.

Okay, let’s start out with the design, shall we?

The Canon Powershot G7 X Mark II is a uniquely designed compact camera that measures only 4.15 inches in width, 1.4 inches in length, and 1.6 depth. It boasts a metal construction, while the device has a weight of 11 ounces, and it feels kinda substantial when you hold it in your hands. In addition, the rubberized grip adds an extra level of comfort, and it also gives a great look to the overall aesthetics.

One of the most appealing features of the design is the 3-inch adjustable LCD display since it can be flipped 45-degrees down or 180-degrees up to face its user, nonetheless, it helps for shooting from different angles, while it also makes the camera very practical. Other than that, you will find the display to be quite bright, while it features a resolution of 1.04 million dots under an anti-glare glass screen. That’s not the only area where the display will amaze you, it is also very helpful with showing all the information you need in order to optimize the settings, such as the ISO settings, flash, white balance, picture style, exposure compensation, battery life, and storage space.

Performance-wise, the 20.1-megapixel sensor renders colors beautifully while it also delivers sharp and crisp images, and above all, it runs the DIGIC 7 image processor, which is great to see such an image processing engine of this caliber in a camera of this price range. On the other hand, the RAW images will give you more control over the highlights, shadow details, and grain. However, there’s one downside to this camera, and that is the lack of 4K recording. I mean, video quality is great, but it can only record at 1080p, and at 120 frames-per-section, which means that this camera includes a slow-motion feature for additional versatility, but that’s not really groundbreaking since many cameras out there have this feature. With the ability to shoot continuously at up to 8 fps, it can help you capture incredible images with nearly no time wasted.

There’s also an HDMI port that allows the camera to be used with an external monitor or external recorder, but take in mind that when you’ll use the HDMI port, the LCD display will go black, while the touchscreen feature will also be out of your reach.

It is also important to mention that this camera has 31-Point AF system in it, and this is pretty impressive, since we’re talking about a point-and-shoot camera, and for the price, it’s definitely groundbreaking.

Nonetheless, I do like the Canon Camera Connect app, and it can be pretty useful in most situations. Basically, the camera generates a custom Wi-Fi network that will allow users to connect the camera to a smartphone via the Canon Camera Connect app, afterward, you will be able to wirelessly control the camera and use a feature called “Live View” to take shots using just your smartphone, pretty interesting right?

In terms of ISO range, this camera stretches up to 12800, but from my experience, I think that shooting at ISO400 results for better picture quality, even in low-light situations. In other words, it has excellent low and mid-ISO image quality.

When it comes to connections, this camera is Wi-Fi and NFC enables, which means that you can connect to any smartphone or tablet device instantly to share your photos, share your work on different sites, and so on.

Simply put, I really like the Canon Powershot G7 X Mark II, since it delivers great value for the money, and it has a plethora of features, including some of the higher-end cameras.

Canon G9X Mark II

The Canon G9 X Mark II is a budget-oriented pocketable, superfast camera which comes in a compact shape, and it is most suitable for sports, travelers, and vloggers, due to its portability and design. I said that I’ve used the Canon G7X Mark II for quite some time, but for this camera, all I’ve done is research, and I haven’t really had the change to try it out, but I’ll see to it.

Although, while comparing the specs of these two cameras, I’m pretty sure we’ll end up with a decision, which camera is better and most suitable for what, and which camera outperforms the other in specific cases and overall.

Firstly, we’ll start with the design as I always like to point out every detail about the overall appearance of a camera.

This particular camera boasts a retro look until you realize that it has a large touch panel when you turn it on, and in my opinion, it fills most of the rear of the camera. However, I really like the textured brown faux leather on the sides, it gives a great look to the overall aesthetics, while it also delivers great comfort while holding the camera, as many users reported.

Since we mentioned the large touch panel, the LCD takes up 3×2 inches on the back of the camera, while it delivers a bright and accurate display, and it boasts an excellent resolution. But there’s a downside to this, from my research, I noticed many users were complaining about the screen that it wasn’t able to perform that well in outdoor light.

Okay, now, let’s get more into the specifics and see what this camera is truly capable of.

Having a 20.2-megapixel sensor, the Canon G7 X Mark II can shoot photos up to a 5472 x 3648 resolution. Other than that, it features a built-in 28-84mm lens, which translates to a max aperture range of f/2.0-4.9, however, this is not groundbreaking since there are many other competitors which more than this. What really good when it comes to performance is the DIGIC 7 image processor, which can be rarely found in cameras of this price range.

When it comes to video recording, the Canon G9 X Mark II has a decent video quality while it can record at 1920 x 1080 video at up to 60 frames per second. In addition to this, this camera’s ISO range stretches from 125-12,800 in 1/3 EV steps, which is pretty good, but yet again, there are better options at this price range available.

However, it is great that it can shoot continuously at an impressive rate of 8.2 frames per second. It beats the Canon G7 X Mark II by just 0.2fps since the G7 X Mark II could shoot continuously at 8.0 frames per second.

Same as the Canon G7 X Mark II, one of my favorite features of this camera is also the Canon Camera Connect app.

However, there are other connection methods included, such as the Wi-Fi and NFC. It is easy, fast, and profitable since you can pair the camera with your smartphone device to easily share photos, transfer, and much more.

All and all, it’s really hard to compare the Canon G7 X Mark II with the Canon G9 X Mark II, since they are very similar in both performance, features, and price. I haven’t used this camera, but from what I’ve read during my research, and from what I’ve gotten from customers who already purchased the product, it is a reliable camera, with stunning picture quality, and remarkable video recording capabilities.

Conclusion

As we reached the end of this article, by now, I believe you have enough arguments to know which camera is most suited for you, and which one meets your requirements the most.

To be honest, I can’t really decide which camera is better since they both have the same specs, however, I think that the only advantage that the G7 X Mark II has over the Canon G9 X Mark II, is the flip-out screen, which can be really useful in most situations, so there’s something else to help you with your decision.

No matter what your decision is, you simply can’t go wrong with these cameras, since they offer great value for the money, and they are perfect for people looking for a portable camera for travels, sports, or just as a second camera for their hobby, or job.
