I have both. The M50 has a bigger sensor and performs better in low light. By this much Click the link and add other cameras to see how much of a difference this is (cameras with smaller and larger sensors.)
The G7XII fits in a jacket pocket. The M50 doesn't. The M50 has an EVF that is really handy when shooting in the bright sun.
The M50 is an ILC so you have the flexibility of using different lenses. But because it is an ILC you might not be able to shoot in places where an ILC is either frowned upon or not allowed.
I have a Pixel 2 that is my first choice. It is only when the Pixel 2 won't do that I break out the larger cameras (for simplicity's sake I didn't mention all the cameras I travel with.)
Either a G7XII or the M50 are good choices, depending on your priorities. There are good reasons why both are popular.

It's not what he wants, but I consider the M100 to be the Big Lens Brother of the G7 X II, in that they both have the same no-viewfinder, no-hotshoe form factor. The M100 is only $400 (with lens), so it's good for people who are on a tight budget.

These are not that brutally expensive (I guess TO considers $1200 as too much, much more than G7Xii or M50) as the RX100M6, but still have many possibilities. Faster AF, better IS and brightness of the G7Xii (f/1.8-2.8 24-100mmeq, 24-70mm) less zoom range, but the same as the M50 / M100.Moreover these Sony's have uncropped 4K (unlike the M50) video while the G7Xii has no 4K at all. And they have time lapse (via Playmemories) and builtin super slow motion.

...What lens(es) you put on the M body.
All the (slower) zooms completely erase the so-called ISO-DR advantage compared to the G(5/7)X 1.8 to 2.8 fixed lens. Only when you use the 2 (relatively) fast single focal (with AF) lengts, the M starts to shine. The 22 F2.0 is great, the 32 F1.4 is magnificent. Or any ef/efs fast single focal length.
Both camera's (G7X and M50 also) complement nicely in your bag. Ergonomics, UI menu structure and TTL flash are high on my "need to" list.

That is true from a sensor point of view. But once you add in the lens it is not so clear cut. The lens on the G7X is 2 stops faster than any zooms lens that are available for the m50 natively. So while the M50 has less noise at the same ISO, you will always be two ISO stops lower on the G7X. This cancels out the advantage entirely for noise.
You can using prime lenses at fast aperture to get the advantage back, but there are not many available for the m50 without resorting to adapters. And an SLR lens with an adapter cancels out the portability goal in most cases.
Also, the lens on the G7X has a larger zoom range than anything remotely compact on the m50.
The G7XII fits in a jacket pocket. The M50 doesn't. The M50 has an EVF that is really handy when shooting in the bright sun.
There is always the G5 X if an EVF is important to you. Same lens and sensor as the G7X II, just in a slightly bigger body with an EVF bump.
The M50 is an ILC so you have the flexibility of using different lenses.
flexibility, but also somewhat required to become as versatile as what the G7X II can shoot.
But because it is an ILC you might not be able to shoot in places where an ILC is either frowned upon or not allowed.
This is true. Also, once you add lenses, you need a bag.
I have a Pixel 2 that is my first choice. It is only when the Pixel 2 won't do that I break out the larger cameras (for simplicity's sake I didn't mention all the cameras I travel with.)
I do the same.

Agreed!

The 1" sensor in the G7XII may be smaller but it is a more efficient design than the APS-C sensor in the M50. Coupled with a slower kit zoom such as the EF-M 15-45mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM lens, the advantage of the larger APS-C sensor is mostly lost in low light conditions.
The G7X II has a relatively fast lens at F1.8-2.8. Considering the crop factor, it is still faster than the EF-M 15-45mm F3.5-6.3 lens in the entire range.
Now if a fast prime is used, such as the EF-M 22mm F2 or EF-M 32mm F1.4 is used with the M50, the combo becomes faster at that single focal length and will be better in low light and provide shallower DOF.
However neither prime has IS. If we factor in a modest 2 stop IS, the advantage of the EF-M 22mm F2 is lost on stationary subjects and almost on the still faster EF-M 32mm F1.4 at 45mm equivalent focal length.
Dynamic range wise, they are close.

I use the G7XII for all you want.
Best for Indoor without flash for kids and pets.
Through glass better than DSLR Nikon D5100 F 1.8.
Fine Details as picture Style even runs with RAW.
Last holiday i had it
Mostly great.
This holiday i used the new SX70.
Very happy in bright sun.
EFV WOW.
Excellent for Architecture wide angle 21 mm
And zoom to the belltower or clockdial.
SOME SHOTS i could not make with the G7XII without EVF.
MACRO is not good with G7XII.
For travelling now SX70 is my favorite.
The G7XII is so small, so i have now both in my bag.
RAW Low Light with G7XII is breathtaking.
The built in RAW Converter is the best i ever saw.
😉
SX70 ONLY ABOUT 600g.
Men can hold and zoom and click with one hand.
