Size and weight are big decision factors when you are trying to find the ideal camera for your needs. In this section, we are going to illustrate the Canon M50 and Panasonic GX9 side-by-side from the front, back and top in their relative dimensions. Canon M50 has external dimensions of 116 x 88 x 59 mm (4.57 x 3.46 x 2.32″) and weighs 390 g (0.86 lb / 13.76 oz) (including batteries). Panasonic GX9 has external dimensions of 124 x 72 x 47 mm (4.88 x 2.83 x 1.85″) and weighs 450 g (0.99 lb / 14.36 oz) (including batteries).

Below you can see the front-view size comparison of the Canon M50 and the Panasonic GX9. Panasonic GX9 is 16mm shorter and 12mm thinner than Canon M50 but it is also 8mm wider.

Weight is another important factor, especially when deciding on a camera that you want to carry with you all day. Canon M50 is 60g lighter than the Panasonic GX9 but we don't think this will make a significant difference.

Also keep in mind that body weight is not the only deciding factor when comparing two interchangeable camera bodies, you also have to take into account the lenses that you will be using with these bodies. Since Canon M50 has an APS-C sized sensor and Panasonic GX9 has a smaller Four Thirds sensor, Panasonic GX9's lenses for a similar focal length and aperture will generally be lighter and smaller than the Canon M50 lenses.

Unfortunately neither the Canon EOS M50 nor Panasonic Lumix DC-GX9 provides any type of weather sealing in their bodies, so you have to give extra care especially when you are shooting outdoors. If weather sealing is a must-have feature for you, check these sections: Top Mirrorless Cameras with Weather Sealing

LCD Screen Size and Features

Canon M50 and Panasonic GX9's LCD screens have the same diagonal size of 3.00 inches.

Panasonic GX9 features a Tilting-only screen which is mostly only good for shooting from waist or over-the-head levels. On the other hand, Canon M50 sports a Fully Articulated screen which is more flexible and useful, especially for taking selfies and video.

Canon M50 has a 24.0MP APS-C (22.3 x 14.9 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Digic 8 processor. On the other hand, Panasonic GX9 has a 20.0MP Four Thirds (17.3 x 13 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and features Venus Engine processor.

One other difference between these two cameras that is worth mentioning is that Panasonic GX9's sensor doesn't have an anti-alias (Low-Pass) filter. Removing anti-alias filter increases the sharpness and level of detail but at the same time, it increases the chance of moiré occurring in certain scenes.

Below you can see the M50 and GX9 sensor size comparison.

Canon M50 vs Panasonic GX9 Sensor Size Comparison
Sensor Size and Resolution Comparison image of Canon M50 and Panasonic GX9 Cameras

As seen above, Canon M50 has a 1.5x Larger sensor area than Panasonic GX9. Larger sensors give photographer more control on the depth of field and blurry background compared to smaller sensor when shot in same focal length and aperture.

The number of available lenses is a big deciding factor when choosing your interchangeable lens camera. When we look at the available lenses for these two cameras, we see that the Panasonic GX9 has an advantage over the Canon M50 There are 130 lenses for the Panasonic GX9's Micro Four Thirds mount, but on the other hand, there are only 29 lenses for the Canon M50's Canon EF-M lens mount.

Another important factor is the availability of image stabilization. Panasonic GX9 has a big advantage in this regard because it has a sensor based image stabilization which means that all the lenses mounted to this body will be stabilized. On the other hand, Canon M50 doesn't have this feature so you have to buy a lens with optical stabilization feature. Currently there are 6 lenses for Canon EF-M mount with Optical Image Stabilization features.
