Due to a number of circumstances, the last time I found myself behind the wheel of a Volvo for any appreciable stretch was when the Swedish company was still owned by Ford (although the powers that be in Dearborn, Michigan, were in the process of divesting themselves of the brand). With Volvo now owned by Chinese auto manufacturer Geely, I was curious as to whether its cars had lost any of their uniqueness, much like rival manufacturer Saab had under its ill-fated time with General Motors.

Based on the revised-for-2014 S60, I’d say that Volvo is still as Swedish as Ingmar Bergman films, IKEA and boiled potatoes. Just as important, the company’s compact sport sedan has become more assertive.

Certainly, the reshaped front fascia gives the second-generation S60 (in production since 2010) a new lease on life — not that it was pug ugly to begin with. But the S60 is up against the Mercedes C-Class, BMW 3 Series and Audi A4, not to mention a number of Asian and Detroit players, so it can’t afford to slack off. The wider grille and daytime running lights, the bolder hood and all the other sheet metal massaging keep it in the styling game.

The interior of the 2014 Volvo S60 T6 AWD can be characterized as simple Scandinavian elegance. Premium materials are abound, offset with tasteful satin metal trim. And the dash layout is logically laid out and well marked.

Still, styling is subjective; power is quantifiable. And, in T6 form, there is more than plenty to be had. While the entry-level T5 makes do with a wholly estimable 250-horsepower, turbocharged 2.5-litre in-line five-cylinder, the T6 adds another cylinder, a half litre of displacement and an extra 50 hp — a nice round 300 to play with. (If you want even more performance, ante up for the R-Design version, which comes with a 325-hp turbo six.)

This isn’t going to be a case of whether the Volvo puts out more power than an Audi but less than a Cadillac — in the compact sport sedan segment, 300 ponies is competitive and, in the S60’s case, more than enough to give the 1,720-kilogram T6 AWD version plenty of zip when the gas pedal is given a goose. In Sport mode and now with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for 2014, the car can hit 100 kilometres an hour in a quick 5.9 seconds. Worth noting, however, is that the throttle has a bit of a hair trigger when self-shifting, imbuing the car with an uncharacteristic — for a Volvo — jumpiness. Ease up at launch for a smooth getaway, though, and the T6 is then as eager as anything from Stuttgart, Munich and Ingolstadt.
