So its been a long time since I posted on the forum, or played around with some RC.
However the other week I brought down my collection and dusted them off, sold my TT01 to raise some funds and have been using my DT02 with my son, he is 4 in July and has been having a blast driving the DT02 with a 17 turn Motor, its a bit fast for him though lol
So I've wanted a CC01 for a while and figured this was the perfect excuse, a crawler for me and something slow for him.
Anyway I wondered if anything has been changed in the kits over the years, I'm deciding between the pajero rally or the free lander...apart from the shells is the kit contents any different.
Also which one do folk think is the better / more scale looking machine.
Many thank,
Chris

It's worth mentioning first off that the CC01 isn't much of a crawler unless you get into some serious mods, and it's easily outclassed by the Axial SCX-10, Vaterra Ascender etc - but as a road-biased trail truck it can't be beaten for scale looks and handling, IMO. Possibly my all-time favourite Tamiya chassis and one I'm desperate to get back on the trail with again ![]()
Someone else will probably be along to confirm but I don't think the internals have changed over the year. Both the Pajero Rally and the Landfreeder are lexan shells, I think both use the short wheel base. Internally I'd expect them to be identical.
Note that the CC01 still has the same sloppy steering arrangement. The GPM steering hop-up fitted from the off will prevent the tube from wearing and give you tighter steering for the life of your CC01. Obviously, full bearings all round are recommended too. Other than that you don't need anything in the way of hop-ups if you just want to go gently trailing, but the CC01 really lends itself to both custom and off-the-shelf mods. Plenty of build threads in these parts if you search. Maybe check this thread, which was started recently over in the Monster Trucks forum:
Regarding what is more scale looking, I'd say it's down to personal preference. I'd overlooked the Landfreeder for ages (despite actually having an NIB one in my garage) because I thought it was a very generic 4wd pickup. It's actually quite a good rendition of the '87-'91 F150 if painted and decalled right. It also comes with the smaller diameter road-biased tyres which give it a really good mildly-modified street truck look, in my opinion. The Pajero Rally has the more normal BFG tyres and bigger arches, it looks like the real thing and should trail a little better with those bigger tyres. Personally I think there are better options for true scales - the hardbody Pajero and the Jeep Wrangler are my faves. I'll be using my Landfreeder chassis to put my old Pajero back on the trails again. I still fancy getting another, maybe this time to build as a bone-stocker, or to build up with a host of aftermarket hop-ups, as up to now all my mods (bar the steering upgrade) have been home-brews.

Mad Ax thanks for the awesome reply, maybe the word crawling was to lose a term, I think as you say trailing, basically walking round the forest / park getting it a bit dirty on some lose ground and rough terrain, not proper rock crawling.
I was aware the sloppy steering was still an issue, the upgraded GPM part along with bearings would be put in from the word go.
I wasn't aware that the land freeder didn't have the BFG tires, I know they are a hard tire etc but they do look nice and scale... I don't mind the lexan shell... if it got mangled id think of going down the bruder route for a replacement shell. However if the land freeder shell is for running road style tyres, does that mean the bigger BFG or chunky crawler/trailer tyres would have issue fitting.
I do also like the unimog... its a 3rd option

I've had a few CC01's and fell out with them when I bought a SCX10, but that was silly money in comparison. Having sold that last year I picked up the Pajero Rally Sport this year BNIB for just £101 and I'm loving it again.
All I've done is fitted bearings, steel pinion, 55turn motor and a cheap set of 96mm Kong style tyres and it's been brilliant. The Rally Pajero uses the shortest wheelbase setting on the CC01 which gives it a reasonable tight turning circle even with the rear diff locked and thick oil in the front. The tyres were pretty soft as standard and had decent grip but I already had the 96mm ones and wanted the extra ground clearance.
As it is I've not bothered with the usual "brick removal" mod and I've even left the front bumper on as this will likely be lent out to novice RC drivers or kids so the slower motor and bumper help to protect it.
Only mods I've done are removing the pegs on the C hubs to allow a bit more steering throw and cut the wedges off the bumper to get better clearance on approach angles. I did also trim the wheel arches right out and streamline the lower mud guards as they were likely to get hung up on the trails anyway. And yesterday I added some front fog lights.
I use mine off road on rough woodland trials and a little bit of crawling and it's handled everything really well. With the 55x2 motor and 16T pinion it crawls great but still has a decent scale top speed between the rough stuff.
Itll climb all over those decking steps!
Next mods will be to add a layer of lead in each wheel to help lower the COG and eventually I'll fit the alloy steering set from GPM. I also have a rally cockpit interior to fit and improve the scale looks and wire up those fog lights 😉

The Pajero Rally also looks good as a 'street / green laner' version too (I'm still not decided on the wheels
)
Junfac front bumper btw

I absolutely LOVE the livery you've put on this Pajero!

Santa brought me a CC-01 Bronco last Christmas to run on the trails and it's been fantastic in that regard. I did use spacers in the rear to take out the slop. As for hop-ups I've installed: rubber shielded bearings throughout, locking alloy hex hubs, rear link extensions, the JunFac skid plate, 1.55" KTX Kong tires on white faux stamped steel rims, Atomik 60T motor paired with a HobbyWing 1060 (waterproof) ESC, and I put the receiver in a box from the TT-02B.

Thanks, it's just the standard decal pack in the Pajero Rally Sport kit. All I changed was painting the shell white instead of silver. I also didn't mask the rear windshield so it would look a bit more sporty. With this and my TL01LA EVO VI I'm building up quite a Mitsubishi rally team 😜

The one thing I disliked about the CC-01 chassis is the stock rear lower links, they tend to flex and bend when trying to compress the rear suspension, so an alloy 4 link upgrade would be a good idea, along with soft springs and thin damper oil so that you get actual suspension compression instead of the flexing

Agreed - the stock rear links are certainly worth upgrading. The only upgrades I would consider more important are bearings, pinion, tyres and steering rack.

Just to update all you guys, I plumped for a CC01 425 Unimog, which arrived yesturday. Checked out the contents of the box last night and the only thing I notice different from the norm is Tamiya have changed the colours of the nylon gears from off white to black.
Cant wait to start building it up ![]()

Hope to see a build thread with plenty of pics!
We have a few CC-01 build threads on the go already, but everyone seems to take a different approach with this very versatile model, so there is certainly room for another!

I second the request for a build thread. Each one comes out differently than the others. It's always great to see someone else's take on the model.

As requested, I have created a build thread, just pending approval.
