Certification in Transcultural Nursing

A Legacy of Excellence

Certification in Transcultural Nursing began in 1987 with the establishment of a Certification Committee. This committee developed a multiple-choice examination, followed by an oral examination. The first certification exam was administered in 1988, with testing typically held during the Annual Conference of The Transcultural Nursing Society (TCNS).

Advancing Certification Standards

In 2004, the TCNS Board of Trustees appointed a Certification Task Force to review current practices and recommend future directions for certification. Following the Task Force’s work, the Transcultural Nursing Certification Commission (TCNCC) was established in 2006.

The TCNCC began extensive organizational work in 2007, leading to the development of a new advanced exam and testing process.

• 2009: The first pilot exam was conducted in January–February, followed by a second pilot in June–July. The advanced exam and procedures were officially implemented in December.
• 2011–2012: The Basic Certification Exam was piloted and formally implemented in 2012.

Demonstrating Knowledge and Commitment

Both Advanced and Basic Certification in Transcultural Nursing affirm a nurse’s knowledge, experience, and commitment to culturally competent and congruent care. Certification demonstrates to colleagues, patients, employers, and the broader healthcare community a dedication to advancing transcultural nursing practice.

Independent Certification

Certification in Transcultural Nursing is an independent credential. It is not affiliated with the ANCC or other certifying agencies at this time. We encourage members and interested nurses to stay connected with TCNS as more information becomes available about future certification developments
