ANNEX A STATEMENT OF UNDERSTANDING FOR ORIGINAL ENLISTME NT IN THE C OAST GUARD An original and three copies of this form shall be prepared. It will become an Annex to the Enlistment/Reenlistment Document, Armed Forces of the United States (DD-4). 1. Being an applicant for enlistment in the U. S. <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong>, I certify that, prior to taking the Oath of Enlistment, the following obligations have been explained to me: a. I understand that in the event I am attached to a shore station beyond the continental limits of the United States at the time of my expiration of enlistment, I will be discharged on the date of my first arrival within the continental limits of the United States, or on the date that I can be discharged or reenlisted at my station beyond the continental limits of the United States, whichever is earlier; in either case for a period not to exceed three months. (14 USC 367(a)(2)). b. At the expiration of my enlistment, I may be involuntarily retained in the <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> for reasons essential to the public interests, for a period not to exceed thirty days. (14 USC 367(a)(4)). c. If I am offered and accept an appointment as a temporary commissioned officer, I will be discharged prior to being commissioned. (Article 12-B-11(h), <strong>CG</strong> Personnel Manual, COMDTINST M1000.6 (Series)). d. My enlistment will be involuntarily extended to make up lost time due to desertion, absence without leave, confinement while awaiting trial and disposition by court-martial, confinement under sentence of a court-martial, or time lost due to inability to perform duties because of intemperate use of drugs or alcoholic liquor, or because of disease or injury resulting from my misconduct. (10 USC 972). 2. I understand that if, upon completion of active duty, I do not reenlist or am not immediately discharged, I will be placed in the Ready Reserve; and that, upon completion of five years of combined active duty and satisfactory participation in the Ready Reserve, I will be eligible for transfer to the Standby Reserve, and if I so apply, I will be transferred to the Standby Reserve for any remaining portion of my military service obligation. 3. I understand that under the authority of 14 USC 2, the <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> is tasked with the enforcement of all applicable Federal laws on or under the high seas and waters subject to the jurisdiction of the United States. As a member of the U.S. <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong>, I understand that I may be called upon to bear and use arms in the fulfillment of these law enforcement duties. I further understand that the <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> is an armed force and that as a member U.S. DEP T.
