Safelock is a mechanism to make the car harder to break into once it's locked.  It disables the interior door opening levers.  

 

Basically the 'CHECK SAFELOCK' message is simply a message to remind you to lock the car properly on exit.  Previous Mk6's had this message too.  

 

To ensure Safelock is activated:

  • On a car without keyless  - press lock icon on the key remote fob ONCE only.  Pressing the lock icon TWICE deactivates Safelock so the interior door levers still operate, meaning the car is less secure to thieves.
  • On a keyless car - gently swipe or touch hand over the dimple in the exterior door handle ONCE.

Word of warning - if you exit the car and lock it with one press of the key (activating safelock) then anyone remaining in the car will not be able to get out.  I once got locked in my old GTI when my partner by habit locked it when he got out.  He was gone for about 20 mins and in that time the car heated up VERY quickly and I couldn't open any windows or exit the car.  It was a very unpleasant and scary 20mins!!!

As above, it's a warning / reminder that locking your doors will activate your Deadlocks (Safelock), therefore locking anyone else in the car who won't be able to get out.

Thanks for explaining this. 

 

I have looked through the User Handbook and it says nothing about it (although it does explain deadlocking - and the option not to do so - it does not mention the message). I was worried that I was being told to go and check something.
