Cheng Xiaoshi (Chinese: 程小时 Chéng Xiǎoshí) is the main protagonist of the Link Click donghua series. He has the ability to dive back into photos through clapping his hands, allowing him to possess the photographer's body in order to fulfill their client's wishes. Alongside Lu Guang, he is able to share his consciousness and directly change the events of the timeline in the photo.

Appearance

Cheng Xiaoshi has a thin, tall build, light skin, and a handsome face, with light brown eyes and a thin nose. He has curly, raven black hair that parts just above his left eye and curls a few inches below the nape of his neck.

In Season 1, he is fitted with a steel blue and cream colored letterman jacket, with an image of an orange hawk mirrored on each breast. Underneath, he wears a plain white t-shirt. Finally, he sports black pants, black socks, and grey slip-ons.

In Season 2, he wears a black letterman jacket with a clock symbol on one side on top of a white hoodie. He has black pants with a thin white stripe down both sides and white shoes.

In the character page released by Bilibili and in some illustrations created by INPLICK, he sports the same outfit but with a different color scheme—with a black and white letterman jacket and white hawks, a black shirt and black shoes.

During his time at high school, he sports what is presumed to be the school's uniform. He wears a grey dress shirt with the collar wide open underneath his blazer.

During his time at university, he wears a baggy, steel blue and grey striped, wide shoulder shirt, a small brown belt, black knee-length shorts, and retains his black socks and grey slip-ons. At his university graduation, he is seen sporting the same charcoal black graduation gowns, complete with the teal and white stole and a teal circle on his left breast. He also sports the graduation cap, with a teal bottom, a charcoal black mortarboard and a red tassel, alongside his peers.

In Episode 10, while repainting the Time Photo Studio, he is seen wearing a white mask over his face, a black t-shirt, a grey-blue apron, and cuffed blue jeans with black sandals.

When transmigrating into another person's body using a photo, he takes on the body of the person but has golden eyes.

Personality

Cheng Xiaoshi is a playful, laidback, and childlike character who has a habit of taking things too lightly. Sporting a prominent mischievous streak, he is fond of teasing others and goofing around. Described as the less responsible and dependable one by Qiao Ling, he oftentimes gets berated and beaten up by her due to his brash attitude. Sometimes even Lu Guang gets annoyed by him, but admits that he was first drawn into him precisely because of his naivety, and how genuine he seemed to be when they initially met.[1]

A decidedly headstrong and impulsive individual, Cheng Xiaoshi has a tendency to be short-sighted and makes decisions with his heart rather than his head. This is evident when he replies to Emma's mother (while in her body) despite Lu Guang explicitly telling him not to.[2] It occurs again when he refuses to lose Chen Xiao's basketball match,[3] and when he decides to pursue the capped man while in Xu Shanshan's body, mistaking him to be the murder suspect from a surveillance footage.[4] He improves somewhat later on, becoming less turbulent in his behavior after accepting the fact that the past cannot always be changed. Nevertheless, he still seldomly goes against said principle, as seen in the case of him possessing Lu Guang: attempting to prevent his friend from getting captured, he refrains from the pre-determined act of pursuing Li Tianchen, until essentially being forced to do so.[5]

Furthermore, all his recklessness aside, Cheng Xiaoshi is far from stupid. On several occasions, he displays an acute sense of shrewdness and cunning as a stark contrast to his devil-may-care attitude. His cleverness is well demonstrated in his plan to trap Liu Min, and in how he exploits his powers to escape Li Tianchen, while also managing to trick the latter into freeing Lu Guang.[6] Not one to get frightened easily, he is more than capable of holding his own in a battle of wits, and retain his adaptability, even under extreme stress.[1][7] [6]

The ultimate motivator for most of Cheng Xiaoshi's actions, however, is his inherent kindness. He is extremely empathetic, and has a strong sense of justice, stopping at nothing to do what he perceives is right. Such stance (along with his unintentional thoughtlessness) was shown in his insistence on trying to save the would-be earthquake victims, even though he knew doing so would irrevocably alter the timeline.[8] He has also proven himself to be self-sacrificing, and willing to literally put himself in the line of fire, physically shielding both Li Tianxi and Qiao Ling from getting shot.[9] Additionally, while frequently acting in the heat of the moment, he's still very much affected by the consequences of his actions afterwards, blaming himself for both Emma's death and Xu Shanshan's disappearance.[10]

Cheng Xiaoshi is also extremely sensitive about his parents leaving him while he was a child, even more so as he used to be constantly shunned for this fact. Especially during a younger age, he would lash out at anybody who believed his parents to be dead. Although he tries to stay optimistic, to this day holding onto hope that they are somehow alive, he remains very troubled by their abandonment.[1]

Abilities

Time Jumper

At the start of the series, Cheng Xiaoshi is able to activate his photo jumping abilities by high-fiving Lu Guang or high-fiving himself. His consciousness is then conveyed into the person that took the photo, while Cheng Xiaoshi can direct and control said person. Cheng Xiaoshi's physical ability is also transferred to the person he took over, so he can override the recipient's physical strength. This is exemplified when he punches "Aunt May" although in Dou Dou's body, and how he was able to see even without glasses in Chen Xiao's body. He later learns that he can activate this ability by himself, as long as he is touching the photo too.

Shared Consciousness

When linked with Lu Guang, he can share his consciousness and communicate with him, allowing Lu Guang to direct Cheng Xiaoshi's next steps.

Etymology

Cheng Xiaoshi's family name is 程 (surname) Cheng, a popular surname in Chinese-speaking regions. His given name is 小时, a word meaning "hour." In terms of character naming, 程 can be interpreted to have the meaning of "journey" as in "路程." hence giving his full name a meaning similar to "travelling the hours." likely a reference to his ability.

The final character of his name can be combined with Lu Guang's given name 光 "brilliance." to form the word 时光 (shiguang, the same shiguang as the title of the series), which also means "time." but with a focus on the aspect of flowing time.

In promotional art released before the Season 1 premiere, Cheng Xiaoshi's English name is confirmed to be "Charles." Charles is a French name which means "free man."

Trivia

• Cheng Xiaoshi's character colour ranges between shades of lime green, yellow and orange, and the animal associated with him is a black dog.
• As of Season 2, Cheng Xiaoshi, Lu Guang and Qiao Ling have matching charms on their phones, with Cheng Xiaoshi having a black dog, Lu Guang a white cat and Qiao Ling a white bunny.
• Lu Guang first met Cheng Xiaoshi during school when Cheng Xiaoshi offered to play basket ball with him, he stuck around as a friend because of his innocence.[Note 1]
• Shao Yuanyuan shares multiple embarrassing stories about Cheng Xiaoshi's childhood while possessing Wang Qing to prove her identity. [15]
  • When Cheng Xiaoshi was in kindergarten, he found a cockroach in the bathroom and sprayed insecticide all over the place, almost killing his mother who was taking a shower.
  • When Cheng Xiaoshi was in second grade, he tried to imitate a hero from a cartoon and jumped down the stairs, fracturing his tailbone. This resulted in him getting a lightning-shaped scar on his butt that he was proud of, showing it off for half a year.
  • When Cheng Xiaoshi was in third grade, a girl from his class was required to play the role of a flower fairy, in which he volunteered.
• In the Live Action adaptation, Cheng Xiaoshi owns various sports memorabilia. He also has memorabilia from Japanese anime, such as posters, statues, and fridge magnets of characters from "One Piece", and a statue of Denji from "Chainsaw Man".
