[edit | edit source]The Modern Defence is a solid, if not offbeat, response to White's 1. d4. Black gives up the centre in exchange for slower development on the kingside. White's most common reply is 2. e4, and Black usually responds with 3...Bg7 attacking the pawn and aiming at the d4-square.
White's options are many. Here are the 2 most popular:
- 2. e4 - Pirc (Robatsch) or Modern transposition
- 2. c4 - Heading for various queen's pawn games (e.g. KID, OID, QGD)
