 Could/May/Might + have + Past Participle dùng để chỉ khả năng một việc

có thể xảy ra ở quá khứ hoặc hiện tại

It may have rained last night, but I’m not sure.

John might have gone to the movies yesterday.

The cause of death could have been bacteria.

She usually goes to bed at 9:30 now it is 10:30, he might have gone to bed.

 Should + have + past participle dùng để nói một việc gì đó đáng ra đã xảy

ra ở quá khứ nhưng vì một lí do nào đó mà không thực hiện được

John should have gone to the post office this morning.

(He did not go to the post office)

Maria shouldn’t have phoned John last night.

(She did phone him)

The policeman should have made a report about th burglary.

(He did not make a report)

• NOTES: Thành ngữ was / were supposed to + infinitive có nghĩa tương tự như should have + past participle.

John was supposed to go to the post office this morning.

The policeman was supposed to make a report on the burglary.

 Must + have + past participle dùng để chỉ một sự suy luận hợp lý cho việc

ở quá khứ

The grass is wet It must have rained last night.

Tony’s light is out He must have gone to bed.

Jane did very well on the exam She must have studied.

Sandra failed the test She must not have studied.

 Would + have + past participle (đã rồi) dùng trong câu điều kiện loại
