Clean MkII 16V: 77k-Mile 1989 Volkswagen Golf GTI | Bring A Trailer

This 1989 Volkswagen Golf GTI (VIN 1VWDC0176KV016260) is a desirable 16V twin-cam model that’s said to remain mostly original (excluding its stainless exhaust) with a believable looking 77k miles. Condition shows very well throughout, and everything excluding A/C sounds to be in working order. The car includes extensive original and maintenance documentation, and the ad further claims no rust or accidents as well good running behavior with “no issues.” We’d fix the A/C, ditch the big exhaust tips and happily keep it for the next 30 years. Tornado Red paint and black trim show well in late-afternoon lighting, though the seller does note a few small stone chips on the hood and a couple of parking lot dings in various locations. Wheels are stock and look good with newer Michelins, and the ad claims long-time West Coast residence, no rust, no accidents and no paint.

A stainless performance muffler with dual upswept tips can be seen just under the left rear corner–we’d revert this to stock-style tips ASAP but otherwise the exterior looks great. Shots of the underside of the doors and other details inspire confidence that the car has been as well cared for as claimed. Even sun-fade-prone dark plastic and rubber trim shows quite well.

Sport seats are very cool, especially with the multi-colored cloth inserts seen here. All instrumentation is said to be functional though the air conditioning is in need of service. 77,600 miles are indicated. There’s a yellow 16V badge on the passenger side of the dash which is factory correct.

The engine bay is particularly impressive looking. Though less torquey down low than 8V variants, these twin-cam 16-valvers made up for it with a revvy top end and a respectable 123 hp.
