C2R2 advances academic excellence at Rutgers while supporting state, municipal, and community organizations to help move towards a more resilient New Jersey.

Coastal communities and ecosystems are vulnerable to climate change, and these effects impact the most vulnerable particularly hard. In the face of this growing risk, resilience becomes increasingly important. Creating and deploying sustainable and cost effective hazard mitigation solutions demands:

• New ways of whole-systems thinking that intersect socio-economic, ecological and engineered solutions;
• Trained leaders that have the capacity to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries; and
• Engaged and participatory processes to identify, develop and implement strategies that build communities that are resilient as well as greener, healthier, prosperous, and more equitable.

The Rutgers University Coastal Climate Risk & Resilience (C2R2) Initiative is working to prepare the workforce that will advance coastal adaptation efforts in the face of climate risks. Our innovative and interdisciplinary certificate program trains graduate students to better integrate all the elements of coastal systems and become fluent communicators, while also providing the opportunity to gain real-world experience collaborating with coastal stakeholders.
