Style & Design 7/10

As slightly-bigger-than-a-small-family-car MPVs go, the Golf Plus isn’t a bad-looking car, especially following its 2007 facelift. It’s arguably better proportioned than the Golf, though it is wheel and colour-sensitive and a bit slabby from the side.

Performance 7/10

The entry-level engine takes over 16 seconds to reach 100km/h, while the 1.6 is over 4 seconds faster. The low-power TSi models take around 10 seconds to reach 100km/h, while the high-power version manages it in just 8.8. The diesels are faster than the numbers (1.9 TDi, 11.9; 2.0 TDi, 9.7) suggest.

Ride & Handling 7/10

Despite being a little taller than the Golf, the handling is largely the same, which means reasonable driver involvement and an impressively composed ride. It’s comfortable, safe and secure if lacking the excitement of, say, a C-Max.

Interior & Ergonomics 9/10

The bespoke dashboard design is a little contrived, perhaps, but ergonomic layout is near-perfect, with simple-to-use controls and easy-to-read displays. Visibility is better than in the Golf too, and egress and ingress is improved, thanks to larger doors.

Quality & Refinement 8/10

Because it’s a little more comfort-orientated than the Golf, the refinement is really rather good, although it does lose some composure over challenging roads. The quality is top-drawer, though, and it feels like a well-made piece of kit overall.

Safety 7/10

The Golf Plus has a full compliment of front, side and curtain airbags, with three 3-point seat belts and three headrests in the rear. It also has ISOFIX child seat mounts and a simplified version of traction control. The lack of ESP disappoints, but otherwise it’s about right for the class.

Space & Practicality 6/10

Obviously, the Golf Plus has more interior room than the Golf but because the Golf is already big enough to swallow four adults and their luggage, I can’t really see the point of the Plus. Is it spacious and practical? Yes. More so than a Golf? Not much.

Value & Running Costs 6/10

At almost two-and-a-half grand more than a Golf, the Golf Plus seems to be good value, but it really doesn’t do anything the Golf doesn’t do exceptionally well already. Running costs will be higher because it’s a heavier car (thirstier, tyre wear, etc.) and it’s an unknown used quantity.

Equipment 8/10

All models have rear parking sensors, rear power windows, adjustable rear seats and an outside temperature gauge, while the Comfortline/Sportline models add cruise, alloys, an auto dimming mirror and a trip computer. Sounds great, but air conditioning is an expensive €1,500 option on all models.

Engine Specifications 8/10

There's a decent range of engines available so forget the base 1.4-litre engine and get a turbo- and super-charged 1.4 TSi engine instead. New 122hp version is very CO2 friendly and a good buy in July 2008. The 2.0 TDI is also recommended, though most will buy the adequate 1.6
