At first glance, the 2017 editions of the BMW X5 and the BMW X6 might seem to be the same type of vehicle. They are both mid-size SUVs with slightly different appeal. The BMW X5 has always stuck to the traditional SUV template, while the X6 adopts a car-based approach to design and driving feel.

Performance

One of them is in off-road capability. Weighing nearly 5,000 lbs, the 2017 BMW X5 is admiringly rugged in build and appearance, supremely designed for wild adventures in the outdoors on rough terrain. The double wishbone front suspension and lightweight multi-link rear suspension absorbs turbulence very well to keep the ride smooth and poised, and the electric power steering ensures precise and nimble cornering for a vehicle its size. There?s also the option of adding Dynamic Damper Control or Dynamic Performance Control for even sharper, sportier handling. By comparison, the 2017 BMW X6 is designed to drive more like a family-friendly sedan, and is thus not as suited for off-road driving as the X5.

Design

Also, the differences in exterior design elements give the 2017 BMW X5 the edge in interior space and comfortability. While the X5 is shaped like a regular SUV with a virtually straight roof, the X6 has a sloping roof. The result is lessened rear cabin space and cargo space. The X5 has 0.9 inches more head room and an inch more of leg room in the back than the X6. The same applies to the front seating; for instance, there?s 0.6 inches less head room in the X6. So, ultimately, if you are a frequent traveler or treasure as much room as possible when driving, you?re better off with the BMW X5.

Safety

Both, the 2017 BMW X5 and X6 are great choices to go with in terms of safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, awards X5 a perfect 5-star rating for overall performance in the organization?s crash tests. Similarly, the new X5 scored the best possible ratings ("Good") in the Moderate Overlap Front and Side portions of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety?s (IIHS?s) Crashworthiness Test. It also got the best possible ranking ("Superior") in the IIHS Crash Avoidance & Mitigation Test, which measures a vehicle?s front crash prevention ability. The 2017 BMW X6 has not currently been reviewed by the NHTSA but is equipped with many of the same features as the X5.
