Cách dùng Even

1. Nghĩa

Even được dùng với nghĩa “thậm chí, ngay cả“, dùng để diễn đạt sự bất ngờ, hơn so với dự kiến, mong đợi. Not even thì diễn đạt sự không được như mong đợi/dự kiến.Ví dụ: She’s rude to everybody. She’s even rude to the police. (Cô ấy cư xử thô lỗ với tất cả mọi người. Thậm chí cô ấy thô lỗ cả với cảnh sát.)He can’t even write his own name. (Cậu ta thậm chí còn không viết nổi tên mình.)

2. Vị trí

Even thường đứng giữa câu cùng với động từ.Ví dụ:She has broken all her toys. She has even broken her bike. (Con bé làm hỏng hết tất cả đồ chơi. Nó thậm chí còn làm hỏng cả xe đạp.)KHÔNG DÙNG: Even she broken her bike.

He speaks lots of languages. He even speaks Esperanto. (Anh ấy nói được rất nhiều ngôn ngữ. Thậm chí anh ấy còn có thể nói được quốc tế ngữ Esperanto.)They’re open every day. They’re even open on Christmas day. (Họ ngày nào cũng mở cửa. Thậm chí họ còn mở cửa vào cả ngày giáng sinh.)

Even có thể đứng đầu câu khi nó nhấn mạnh vào chủ ngữ, tương tự như thế, even có thể đứng trước các cụm từ mà nó muốn nhấn mạnh.Ví dụ:Anybody can do this. Even a child can do it. (Ai cũng có thể làm được việc này. Thậm chí một đứa trẻ cũng có thể làm được.)I work every day, even on Sunday. (Tớ làm việc tất cả các ngày, thậm chí cả ngày chủ nhật.)I haven’t written to anybody for months – not even my parents. (Tớ đã không viết thư cho ai hàng tháng trời – thậm chí không viết cả cho bố mẹ tớ.)

Ví dụ trạng từ even trong tiếng Anh

Bạn theo dõi ví dụ sau:

– Tina loves watching television. She has a TV set in every room of the house — even the bathroom.

(Tina rất thích xem tivi. Cô ấy có tivi ở mỗi phòng — ngay cả ở phòng tắm.)

    Chúng ta dùng even khi nói tới điều gì đó không bình thường hay đáng ngạc nhiên. Việc để tivi trong nhà tắm là không bình thường.

Xét thêm một vài ví dụ:

– These photographs aren’t very good. Even I could take better photographs than these.

(and I’m certainly not a good photographer)

(Những tấm hình này không đẹp lắm. Tôi thậm chí có thể chụp được những tấm hình đẹp hơn như vậy.)

(mà tôi tất nhiên không phải là người chụp ảnh giỏi.)

– He always wears a coat — even in hot weather.

(Anh ta luôn mang áo khoác — ngay cả khi trời nóng bức.)

– Nobody would lend her the money — not even her best friend.

hoặc

Not even her best friend would lend her the money.

(Sẽ không có ai cho cô ta mượn tiền — ngay cả người bạn thân nhất của cô ta.)

hoặc

(Ngay cả người bạn thân nhất của cô ta cũng sẽ không cho cô ta mượn tiền.)

Sử dụng even với động từ ở giữa câu

even thường được dùng với động từ ở giữa câu. Ví dụ:

– Sue has travelled all over the world. She has even been to the Antarctic.

(It’s especially unusual to go to the Antarctic, so she must have travelled a lot.)

(Sue đã đi du lịch khắp thế giới. Cô thậm chí đã tới tận Nam cực. )

(Tới Nam cực quả là một việc hi hữu và như vậy hẳn cô ấy đã đi rất nhiều nơi)

– They are very rich. They even have their own private jet.

(Họ rất giàu có. Họ thậm chí có cả máy bay riêng.)

Ví dụ với not even:

– I can’t cook. I can’t even boil an egg.

(and boiling an egg is very easy)

(Tôi không biết nấu ăn. Ngay cả trứng tôi cũng chẳng biết luộc. )

(mà luộc trứng thì rất dễ)

– They weren’t very friendly to us. They didn’t even say hello.

(Họ đã tỏ ra không thật thân thiện với chúng tôi. Thậm chí họ không thèm chào hỏi.)

– Jenny is very fit. She’s just run five miles and she’s not even out of breath.

(Jenny rất khỏe. Cô ấy mới vừa chạy bộ liền năm dặm vậy mà không hề bị thở gấp.)

Even + dạng so sánh

Bạn có thể sử dụng cấu trúc even + dạng so sánh (cheaper / more expensive …) như trong các ví dụ sau:

– I got up early but John got up even earlier.

(Tôi thức dậy rất sớm nhưng John thậm chí còn dậy sớm hơn.)

– I knew I didn’t have much money but I’ve got even less than I thought.

(Tôi đã biết tôi không có nhiều tiền nhưng tôi có thậm chí còn ít hơn tôi nghĩ.)

– We were surprised to get a letter from her. We were even more surprised when she came to see us a few days later.)

(Chúng tôi ngạc nhiên khi nhận được thư cô ấy. Chúng tôi thậm chí còn ngạc nhiên hơn khi cô ấy tới thăm chúng tôi sau đó ít ngày.)

3. Even và Also

Also thường không được dùng để diễn tả sự bất ngờ.Ví dụ:Everybody helped with the packing – even the dog. (Ai cũng chung tay giúp việc đóng gói – thậm chí cả chú chó.)KHÔNG DÙNG: Everybody helped with the packing – also the dog.

4. Even if và even though

Even thường không được dùng như liên từ, nhưng ta có thể dùng even trước if và though.Ví dụ:Even if I become a millionaire, I shall always be a socialist. (Ngay cả khi tôi trở thành triệu phú, thì tôi vẫn sẽ luôn là người theo chủ nghĩa xã hội.)KHÔNG DÙNG: Even I become a millionaire, I shall always be a socialist.Even though I didn’t know anybody at the party, I had a nice time. (Cho dù tớ không quen ai ở biệc tiệc cả, tớ cũng thấy vui.)KHÔNG DÙNG: Even although I didn’t know anybody at the party, I had a nice time. I wouldn’t mary you even if you were the last man in the world. (Tôi sẽ không lấy anh ngay cả khi anh là người đàn ông cuối cùng trên thế giới này.)

Đôi khi ta dùng if với nghĩa tương tự như even if.Ví dụ:I will do it if it kills me = I will do it even if it kills me. (Tớ sẽ làm việc đó cho dù tớ có phải chết vì nó.)

5. Even so và even now

Even so được dùng với nghĩa “tuy thế, dù vậy“He seems nice. Even so, I don’t really trust him. (Anh ta có vẻ tốt. Dù vậy, tớ không thực sự tin tưởng anh ta.)KHÔNG DÙNG:  Even though, I don’t really trust him.

Even now được dùng với nghĩa “mặc dù thế” (in spite of everything that has happened).Ví dụ:He left her ten years ago, but even now she still loves him. (Anh ta rời bỏ cô ấy từ 10 năm trước, nhưng dù thế cô ấy vẫn yêu anh ta.)

Cách sử dụng even though, even when, even if

Bạn có thể dùng even + though/when/if để nối các câu. Chú ý rằng bạn không được dùng even một mình trong những ví dụ sau:

-Even though she can’t drive, she has bought a car. (không nói Even she can’t drive…)

(Cho dù không biết lái xe cô ấy vẫn mua một chiếc xe hơi.)

– He never shouts, even when he’s angry.

(Anh ta không bao giờ la hét ngay cả khi anh ta tức giận.)

– I’ll probably see you tomorrow. But even if I don’t see you tomorrow, we’re sure to see each other before the weekend. (không nói ‘even I don’t see you’)

(Ngày mai có lẽ anh sẽ không gặp em. Nhưng cho dù anh sẽ không gặp em vào ngày mai, chắc chắn chúng ta vẫn sẽ gặp nhau trước cuối tuần.)

So sánh even if và if:

– We’re going to the beach tomorrow. It doesn’t matter what the weather is like. We’re going to the beach even if it’s raining.

(Chúng ta sẽ ra bãi biển vào ngày mai. Thời tiết có như thế nào cũng mặc. Chúng ta sẽ ra bãi biển cho dù (nếu) trời có mưa.)

– We hope to go to the beach tomorrow, but we won’t go if it’s raining.

(Chúng ta hy vọng sẽ ra bãi biển vào ngày mai, nhưng chúng ta sẽ không đi nếu trời mưa.)

Phân biệt even though, even if, even so

1. Phân biệt although, even though, in spite of, despite

Cả bốn từ đều có vai trò như các từ nối để liên kết 2 mệnh đề trái ngược với nhau.

Nhưng although và even though được theo sau bởi một mệnh đề có đầy đủ chủ ngữ và vị ngữ. Còn in spite of và despite luôn đi với một danh từ, danh động từ, đại từ hay Ving.

Although và even though có nét nghĩa khá tương đồng và có thể thay thế cho nhau trong phần lớn các trường hợp.

Ngoài ra, even though chỉ có thể đứng đầu câu hoặc giữa câu, trong khi although lại có thể đứng ở cả ba vị trí: đầu câu, cuối câu và giữa câu nhưng trong các trường hợp kém trang trọng hơn so với even though.

2. Phân biệt even though và even so

Even though và even so đều là các từ nối và có vị trí khá giống nhau.

Tuy nhiên, even though được sử dụng khi muốn nói đến một sự thật hay một việc gì đó luôn luôn xảy ra. Mệnh đề kết quả luôn ở thì quá khứ hoặc hiện tại và trái ngược hoàn toàn với mệnh đề trước.

Còn mệnh đề kết quả của even so lại là một điều gì đó bất ngờ vô cùng hoặc ngoài mong đợi, ngoài sức tưởng tượng.

Ex:

Jennie is never happy. Even though you do everything his way, she is still dissatisfied.

(Jennie không bao giờ hạnh phúc. Mặc dù bạn làm mọi thứ theo cách của anh ấy nhưng anh ấy vẫn không hài lòng.)

The bed is extremely large and heavy. Even so, Jimmy managed to carry it into the house by himself.

(Chiếc giường cực kì to và nặng. Tuy nhiên, Jim đã tìm cách để tự mang nó vào trong nhà.)
