jmillheiser J my GTI is due for a timing belt, I would do it myself but lack the facilities to do it (I live in an apartment and dont have the space to do any major work on the car) so am looking for a shop to do it. How many hours of labor should it normally take to do timing belt, tensioner and water pump (the standard timing belt replacement drill)? I was intending to purchase the parts beforehand and just pay the shop for labor. Also any good shop recommendations in the SE wyoming/northern CO area? Or maybe someone who has garage space and has done it before willing to help me do it myself? #1 · Sep 24, 2010 (Edited) my GTI is due for a timing belt, I would do it myself but lack the facilities to do it (I live in an apartment and dont have the space to do any major work on the car) so am looking for a shop to do it. The total was around $1100. That included my regular oil and filter change, replacement of timing belt, water pump, timing belt damper, and accessory belts (a/c, power steering and alternator). Oh, also got 4 new double platinum plugs ($30 each. ouch!) Parts were $500, labor $600. #8 · Sep 26, 2010

Holy **** thats like a rod install! 600 labor is way too much IMO 0 Reply #4 · Sep 26, 2010 the prev owner of my car had it done and he showed me the receipt and it was 900 for water pump timing belt and tensioner so your probably looking at around 1000 or 300 if you do it yourself its a simple install if you can use a ratchet you can change your tb #5 · Sep 26, 2010 Get the parts from mjmautohaus.com or ecstuning.com, then go pick up a Hanes or Bently manual and you should be good. Like they said you will need a jack that can go high enough to support the engine, jack stands, and various wrenches, sockets, etc. I have a hanes manual and it is pretty descriptive, it even has pictures for retards like me. I wouldn't pay 1g to have a belt replaced. Good luck:beer: ps. Don't forget to pick up some new stretch bolts for the passenger side motor mount and some G-12 coolant:thumbup: #14 · Oct 4, 2010 +1 just did mine with a buddy... took 4hrs total... not as bad as it seems and certainly not worth 1G to have done... that's a major ripoff!!! 0 Reply #6 · Sep 26, 2010 This may be worth checking out: http://www.intengineering.com/Integrated-Engineering-p9078957-1-2.html This kit will eliminate the gas-filled tensioner which is a common failure point. #7 · Sep 26, 2010 I believe the book time is ~8 hours. It took me a little over 10 hours to change mine myself #9 · Sep 26, 2010 (Edited) About 4 or 5 years ago, it cost me about $500 (parts from MJMautohaus and labor from local shop). About two months ago, it cost me under $350 (parts from Fourseasontuning and labor from local guy doing timing belts - but hookup price). You should be able to get all this done under $500 with parts and labor from a shop. Avoid the dealer and find someone who has worked on VWs. Parts: timing belt, tensioner, rollers, serpentine belt, thermostat, water pump (metal), etc. #10 · Sep 28, 2010  #11 · Sep 28, 2010 I just got quoted 950 for Tstat, a belt, and the usual tbelt stuff. Got all the parts @ wholesale from vw for 404$! That and saving the money for a tow sure saves a lot of cash. If you have time I would wait and get your parts from ecs or someone else online. i just needed my car done today. #12 · Sep 28, 2010 mine was like 250-260 ish. just parts. It took 11hrs with lunch and mid day rest. Talk to people who've done it before, and learn all you can. For example, don't worry about the second half of the motor mount, just unbolt slide the belt around it and bolt back up. That was 4hrs of my time I'll save if I do it over again. Where i got mine. http://www.blauparts.com/proddetail.asp?prod=GH21104-C #13 · Sep 28, 2010 I was planning to get the parts from ecs tuning, the kit with the belt, tensioner and water pump (metal impeller of course). Im going to venture to guess that manual tensioner conversion requires periodic adjustment of the tensioner to compensate for belt wear. Given that VW never designed the mk 4 golf for manual timing belt adjustment im sure adjusting that would be an involved procedure. #15 · Oct 4, 2010

Checking the tensioner periodically is definitely a good idea, maybe every 20k or something like that. It can be done very easily though as the roller is located on the cylinder head. #16 · Oct 4, 2010 Timing belt I bought the kit from ECS Tuning. The cheaper one (not all OEM) P parts, changed it at 60,000 because it was beginning to make Nose. I assume from the tensioner. Almost have 64,000 running Great. Don't let it go too long or it will cost an arm an a leg to Repair. #17 · Oct 5, 2010 i did mine at in the driveway of a friend from church. took me maybe 16 hrs, but this included running to the store breaks and many mistakes. one of my mistakes was that i left the coolant level wire harness hanging and when i finished, the harness somehow found its way inside a notch between the motor mount and the engine bracket. had to pull motor mounts off again. i also tried replacing tstat by removing alternator but it was seized in there. other than that it was fairly simple using if you search here. marking old belt and transfering marks to new belts. as for the engine bracket, i couldnt get it off so i was going to work around it but my dad somehow got it out with ease... will help if you got some one that will help you #18 · Oct 5, 2010 a VW specialist did mine in 3 hours for $650...
