In its judgment in the case Irish Ferries Ltd v National Transport Authority (C‑570/19), the Court of Justice has provided the interpretation of several provisions of Regulation 1177/2010 on the rights of passengers travelling by maritime transport, in particular compensation rights when services are cancelled, and does not consider that the validity of the Regulation has been called into question.

The preliminary ruling sought guidance on how that EU law applied, and what rights passengers are entitled to, in the event ferry services were cancelled (seven weeks ahead of departure) due to the delivery of the transporting vessel being delayed and ultimately failing to come through.
