What is a CT file?

A CT file is a data file created by Cheat Engine, an open source program used to create "cheats," or modifications, to Windows-based games. It contains game overrides and their address locations within the target program. CT files allow users to edit game properties, such as numbers of lives, high scores, and units of health.

More Information

To open a CT file in Cheat Engine, select File → Load, choose the CT file, and click Open. You can also click the "Open Folder" icon from the interface or simply double-click the CT file if Cheat Engine is installed on your computer and associated with the CT file.

NOTE: CT files are inserted during the execution of a running program and may cause a program to crash.

A CT file may also be a raster image saved in a format used by Scitex graphics processing workstations. It contains image data saved in CMYK, RGB, or grayscale format. CT files often have large file sizes, because they contain uncompressed, high-quality images.

More Information

Scitex (now Scailex) is a multinational company that produces equipment used in the graphic design, printing, and publishing industries. The company created the CT image format for use with its high-end graphics processors.

Some non-Scitex image editors and desktop publishing programs can save images in the Scitex CT format. However, these programs typically save CT files with the .SCT extension. For example, Adobe Photoshop saves Scitex CT images as SCT files.

How to open a CT file

You can open a CT file with many image editors and viewers, including Adobe Photoshop (Windows, Mac), XnViewMP (multiplatform), and ImageMagick (multiplatform). In some cases, you may have to change the file's extension to .sct before you can open it.

How to convert a CT file

You can use XnViewMP to convert CT files to the following formats (and many others):

  • .JPG - JPEG Image
  • .GIF - Graphical Interchange Format
  • .PNG - Portable Network Graphic

  • .TGA - Targa Graphic
