Denis Dang - Jamasian Drama

I refused, for a few years to get Tiktik. I mean, the only reason why I even got twitter was to promote my writing. Snapchat I had for a day and gave up because I had no patience with it. But as I suffer from depression, my Doc suggested I use Tiktok as a way to put myself out there. She thought at 15 second intervals, it would be healthy for me as long as I stayed on the side of Tiktok that is something I was into.

Of course, I fell down the books, Kpop, Asian drama, cosplayers side of Tiktok.

So, this morning I’m going through, to see what nonsense I could get up to on Tiktok for a few minutes and came across a video from a movie. It was beautiful and super graphic-ie and I had to stop and watch. Then tried figuring out what movie it was from. The person who posted the clip told me it was from “NƯỚC CHẢY HOA TRÔI” – a short movie that I could find on Youtube.

So I went digging and even though I don’t speak Vietnamese, I managed to find the creator’s vlive account. His name is Denis Dang and he had the dates for the teasers and the release as well as this gorgeous poster about the movie itself. Now I can’t give you a summary of it because–well, there really isn’t one in English, and I couldn’t figure out a way to summarize it without taking away from the mystique and the wonder of the film. It’s only twelve minutes, and some of y’all waste thirteen weeks on BLs that aren’t worth that time. I can’t seem to find the actors – again, I don’t speak Vietnamese and I’m not as versed in the lettering or the names yet.

Just know, this movie, worth every second.

Now, NƯỚC CHẢY HOA TRÔI” is not your typical BL, which I’ve been begging for. It’s better. It has a storyline that is succinct and quite easy to follow. There is something VERY surprising about the way this film was made, and I will not spoil it here. The amount of value and love and amazingness that Denis Dang put into that twelve minutes! I went through a spectrum of emotions and they were all so good.

The acting was superb. Every emotion showed in their bodies and on their faces. The silent bits for breathing, the music–I will be using the music to write to in a few minutes–the music was serene and beautiful. The colours, the costumes…I’ve seen Wuxia-esque movies where the hair of characters are all a mess and the clothing left little to be desired, but not here. It’s like they put as much care in the visuals as they did in planning of everything else.

The storyline wrapped around love and betrayal and darkness and light. There was something so very good and wholesome, the mixture of BL and non BL together so flawlessly, the graphics and almost angelicness (I’m aware that’s not a real word but it should be) of everything about this film. I watched it once, then a second time, then a third time because I still couldn’t believe what I’d seen and every time, the film hit me a little differently, a little harder, a little better.

I don’t know if Denis Dang will ever see this post. But on the off chance that he does, I have to say this: If there ever comes a time when you think to yourself, I’ve never made a good enough contribution to the history and progression of movies. I’d like you to think back to this post. You have made such a beautiful contribution to the history and progression of movies. You’ve made a fan out of me because this movie, no matter how short, was one of the best things to come into my life, into 2021, into the museum of art that I love.
