California English - US Hello baran 20. Please give us a sentence in which you might use these prepositions. We require 'context' for every question. If you don't have a sentence in mind, you could look over the previous threads you will find by clicking this link ---> by "next to". People have already provided sentences in those threads. Cross-posted with Florentia52 again. :) Last edited: Feb 2, 2014 B

persian For example: The dog is next to her.Or the girl is by the pool. Are both of them used with the same meaning? Uriel-

New Mexico, US American English By is in the general area near something, while next to means to be side by side with something. I would say that the girl is by the pool if she is somewhere near it, but the pool is next to the laundry if the laundry is the next building on the same side of the street. However, the girl could be standing next to a man (at his side, not facing him or behind him). She would be by him if she was in his immediate vicinity but there was no reference to which way they were standing in relation to each other. Of course this is not a hard and fast rule, I just hope it helps you visualize the way we might distinguish between the two words. L

British English 'By' is used in so many different ways it can be quite confusing. It may help you to use 'next to' when the people or things are side by side and 'near' when they close to each other even if they are not side by side. B
