allenpg Just curious what the main differences are between the Shimano HG53, HG73, and HG93 chains other than cost? I just upgraded to an XT 9-speed drivetrain and still have a 3 month old HG53 chain, and was wondering if upgrading to the HG93 (XT level) offers any real advantages. Thanks! -Pete #1 · Jul 7, 2004 Just curious what the main differences are between the Shimano HG53, HG73, and HG93 chains other than cost? Don't mess with them, get SRAM instead! #3 · Jul 7, 2004 Don't you folks ever get tired of being some large companies lacky! Oddly enough Sram is not a small company. Shimano is just fine. It doesn't have the quick release plate though. They both work great. #4 · Jul 8, 2004 Haven't you been ever tired of taking Shimano chain off and mounting it back with that stupid reinforced pin? Even while both SRAM and Shimano will work nearly the same way, I prefer servicing to be slightly more comfortable. #5 · Jul 8, 2004 I have a Dura-Ace Chain (CN-7701). Don't know what the HG designation for it is though. All I gotta say is that it's a really good quality chain and I don't have a need to take the chain off. To service it I just use dishwasher soap and a toothbrush. It Shifts amazingly smooth and is durable as all get out. I used to snap Sram PC-69 chains all the time before i made the switch to the Dura-Ace. Now all of my drivetrain is Shimano. #6 · Jul 8, 2004

Not that you'll notice. If your chain is only 3 months old, you will just be tossing money away upgrading now. Wait until it gets stretched out of tolerance and then get a SRAM or Wipperman. They come with the groovy quick release link. #7 · Jul 8, 2004 Since I clean my chain on a regular basis with a chain machine taking it off isn't a problem. #8 · Jul 8, 2004 If you like Shimano, just install a SRAM power link on your Shimano chain. You get the best of both! It's done all the time. Insert Quotes Post Reply
