Don Khong"' is the largest island in Si Phan Don (4,000 Islands) in the south of Laos.

It is approximately 18km long (north-south) and up to 8km wide (east- west).

It can be reached from Pakse by public or tourist bus. The riverboat service is no longer operating from Pakse. You can still directly charter from either Pakse or Champasak - see linked pages for costs and further information. It can also be reached via the main Route 13 from Cambodia to the south. Passenger ferries run to the main town of Muang Khong (on the islands' east cost, where nearly all the guesthouses are located) from Hai Xay Khoun on the mainland. Car ferries also operate from the mainland town of Hat to Na, which is close to Muang Khong.

Muang Sen is the second largest settlement on the island, which is 8km to the west of Muang Khong, and is on the east coast of the island.

There are a number of other small villages scattered across the island.

Although many islands in Si Phan Don are very flat, Don Khong has a number of modest hills, rising to a maximum of 241 metres above sea level. These offer views over the local inland archipelago.

It should not be confused with the island of Don Khon (or Don Khone) which is a different island around 25 kilometres further south and which adjoins Don Det.
