Known for her groundbreaking work in vision science and her unwavering dedication to patient-centered care, Dr. Chu has helped shape the local eye care landscape and the global understanding of ocular health.

Academic Foundation & Early Career

Originally from Hong Kong, Dr. Chu began her academic journey at National Taiwan University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Botany. She later immigrated to the U.S. and completed her Master of Science in Microbiology at the University of Houston in 1972. That same year, she married her college sweetheart, Robert Sr., beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in science, family, and service.

From 1971 to 1977, she served as a researcher in the Department of Neurology at Baylor College of Medicine, followed by a pivotal role at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler, where she helped establish the Electron Microscopy Laboratory for asbestos research.

In 1980, she was recruited to the University of Texas Medical School at Houston as a Senior Researcher in the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy. While working full-time in research, she began her optometric studies at the University of Houston College of Optometry—where her academic excellence earned her the Bausch & Lomb Outstanding Research Award in Contact Lens Research, multiple scholarships, and recurring placement on the Dean’s List.

Clinical Training & Research

Dr. Chu completed her clinical internship at the Hermann Hospital Eye Center, training under the guidance of Dr. Charles Garcia, a prominent retinal specialist. Their joint research explored diabetic eye conditions in primates and the ocular side effects of developmental anti-cancer drugs, establishing Dr. Chu’s early contributions to translational medical science.

Her clinical interests include contact lens-related ocular tissue changes, UV damage, pharmaceutical and environmental ocular toxicity, and the microscopic effects of long-term lens wear—areas in which she has authored more than 35 peer-reviewed publications and presented nationally and internationally.

Honors, Recognition & Leadership

• Named to the Board of Directors for the North Texas Eye Research Institute at UNT Health Science Center
• Honored with the naming of the “Lena and Robert Chu Electron Microscopy Suite” at UNT Health Science Center in 1996
• Founding member of the American Orthokeratology Association
• Recognized in the Outstanding Young Women of America Directory
• Named one of Fort Worth Magazine’s Top Docs in 2003, 2004, and 2005

Her research has been supported by prestigious grants from the National Eye Institute (NEI), including studies on drug-induced retinal degeneration and conditions simulating retinitis pigmentosa.
