Drivers Side Door Wont Unlock (VY Commodore) - Whirlpool Forums

Hey guys,
I have a 2001 VY and a few days ago I tried to open my car with the keyless and noticed all doors unlocked except the drivers side (so happens to be the most important side!!). I locked the door again with the keyless and tried again to open and on the second try it opened successfully. This morning though it wouldn't open at all, I had to use the passenger side door to get into my car. The weird thing is if I use my keys to open the car it does unlock but it feels very stiff how ever it bloody sets the alarm off for what ever reason. Im just wondering if anyone has any leads on the fault here, I suspect it might be the door lock mechanism (actuator?) or something else.
Any help much appreciated.

The key entry is manually over riding the electronic actuator.

Thank you for the response, is there anyway I can unlock the car with the key without setting the alarm off? What if I lock the door with the key without using the keyless, will that still activate the alarm?

Can't remember on those Commy'sIf you unlock the doors with the remote and the drivers door with the key, the alarm shouldn't go off. You can unlock the door with key and then press the unlock button or stick the key in the ignition and turn it on. All should shut the alarm up.

Gotta be a very quick fella to do that. The alarm will still screech it's t$ts off until you put key in ignition and turn it.
OP get a small flathead screwdriver pop the orange cover off door button, there is another round black one behind door handle you need to pop out. un do screws and pry door trim off.
Reach in and unscrew door actuator. You will need a Torx screw driver to undo the lock. Either go to wrecker or Holden and order a new actuator and re fit it.
Write up on just Commodores that tells you how to do it VY/VZ door actuators. Sometimes a bit of silicone spray will fix it! However, cog may be broken off in which place it will need to be replaced.
Or get a sparky/Mechanic to do it for you. Only way you are going to fix this.
Edit: OP if you can still open door with key then lock your car with the key. You can then unlock it with key and alarm will not go off! Just tried it on mine. alarm didn't go off! However if you lock it with remote the alarm will go off if you open it with key.

Thank you very much for your help! This is exactly what I was wondering if I lock the car with the keys will it still activate the alarm, its a good thing it doesn't because currently the key does work to unlock the car but its very stiff so I imagine theres still an issue. Also im wondering does the alarm self arm after a while even if you lock the car with the key?
I'm tempted to buy some WD-40 or some kind of lubricant and give it a few squirts on the locking mechanism and see if it helps it move up and down.

How stiff? Mine is too with a slight bit of resistance, it wont just turn easily where you Grandmother could turn it, you need to apply a little bit of light force but not to heavy handed. If you deadlock it with key then it's even more of a bitch to open, you will need arms like Arnie. :)
If you really have to struggle with the key to open the door then I would say again actuator problem.
You can try silicone in the lock see how it goes.
If you're having problems with it locking/unlocking with remote then I would say faulty door actuator.
I don't believe it will arm itself if you lock it with key overnight.

Well I have to put in quite a bit of effort for it to unlock with the key to the point im worried the key will break so I suspect the actuator is possibly on its way out which sucks. I guess ill have to go get one from the wreakers or ebay and change it over! Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

That's because you aren't arming the alarm in the first place. Key in door alone does not arm/disarm. Remote unlock or key in ignition will do it. OP might experiment by using remote release button then unlocking drivers with key, not sure though.

Didnt try to open the back to and manually unlock it with your hand?

Sounds like you have an actuator starting or has failed.
The key-fob unlocks the doors by activating the actuators and also turns off the alarm.
Try unlocking the door with the key (this unlocks but leaves the alarm on), then using your fob to also unlock the doors (turning the alarm off).
Im just wondering if anyone has any leads on the fault here, I suspect it might be the door lock mechanism (actuator?) or something else.
Take the door skin off, inspect and spray some WD40 on all the moving parts, it will basically be the grease in the actuator absorbing grit and dust, and slowly jamming up, if you dont loosen it and fix it now, the actuator will burn out and stop functioning as a central locking door altogether, which means it wont sense being unlocked, and wont unlock the other doors as well....

Im perfectly ok with it not being armed in the mean time while I fix this issue, if I can unlock/lock the car with the key without the alarm going nuts then thats ok. Once I replace the actuator then I can return to using the keyless entry :)

Do you just standard lock, or double-lock (deadlock) your car with the fob?
If you double-lock, using the key will feel almost extreme.

Thanks for your help. Yep this is what I might do tonight when im home from work, hopefully the actuator hasn't completely burnt out.

Sorry what do you mean exactly by double locking? Do you mean locking the car with the key and also with the fob after?

Turn the key once, it locks the doors. Turn the key twice, it deadlocks the doors. Nice security feature on the old commys.

One lock, but have two stages.
lock once – all doors are lockedlock twice – all doors are dead locked
unlock once – open driver's side doorunlock twice – open all doors
Boot button operates the boot only. Alarm to the boot is disabled while opened.
My VX have this I am assuming that your VY is the same.

Double lock.
Using the Fob, press lock, then again using the fob, press lock, this "dead locks" the car. Means if someone smashed the window, it's impossible to physically pull up the door lock.
When my wife tried to prove me wrong, she ended up stripping the groves/thread holding the lock to the metal bar, launching the lock knob towards the roof, leading the metal stick that it was attached to still inside the door (door remained locked).
Using the key, lock the door, and without removing the key, after it has returned to it's standard vertical position, lock it again, this will also deadlock the car. As above, if someone smashed the window and tried to lift the lock, it wouldnt unlock.

This is were it is a little tricky...
the VX SS I had only had a medium level BCM, I wasnt able to do the 2-stage unlock.
the VY Sv8 and VY Executive both with Medium level BCM's was able to program the car via the Mode, up and down buttons to enable 2 stage unlocking, so I could walk up to my car, unlock and only the driver's door would unlock, so in a seedy part of town a dodgy car jacket couldnt rush over and jump in the passenger or back seats...
I could also enable auto-door lock on my VY's, so as soon as I left Park, the doors re-locked.
(again, not a feature my BCM level allowed for on my VX SS).
O/P, suggest not playing with these new features until you sort the actuator, as they might cause you some more dramas in longevity of this error.

Removing and replacing the door lock actuator
As for the lock and unlock and other options:
Hold down the mode(?) and set(?) buttons (I think) when you turn the ignition on, it will bring up a whole lot of options
You dont need to start the car, just turn the key to "on"

Yep VY has the bonnet button.
Can I clarify with you, if I unlock the car with the remote and it unlocks all doors except the drivers side, can I open the side passenger door hook around and open the drivers door lock without tripping the alarm off? Or alternatively if I just forget about the keyless and just use he key to lock/unlock without setting the alarm off each time I use the keys?

Sorry must of missed it.
Right this issue seems to have gotten worse, now the car wont unlock/lock with the key, I used the fob to unlock the car then hooked around from the passenger side to unlock the car but now the drivers side wont lock at all! Using the fob lockes all the doors except the drivers one. I thought I could just lock the drivers door from inside using the knob then jump to the passenger side and unlock the door but unlocking the passenger door unlocks all the other door as well.
Looks like im going to have to take it into to a mechanic as this issue has gotten worse unfortunately.
