PEP – or post-exposure prophylaxis – is most effective in preventing HIV infection if given within 72 hours of a potential exposure (i.e., a risk of HIV infection after direct contact with the blood or body fluids of a person with HIV). PEP must be taken for 28 days.
What is PEP?
PEP involves taking antiretroviral (ARV) drugs as soon as possible after a possible exposure to HIV to prevent HIV infection. PEP must be started within 72 hours of exposure to HIV, but the sooner you start PEP, the better. Every hour counts. If you adhere to PEP, you will need to take it for 28 days.
PEP should only be used in emergency situations and must be started within 72 hours of HIV exposure. If you think you have recently been exposed to HIV, see your doctor for advice about PEP immediately.
Who is PEP for?
If you are HIV negative or do not know your HIV status, and in the past 72 hours you have had at least one of the following risks:
- exposure to HIV through unsafe sex (e.g. condom breaks)
- sharing needles
- being sexually assaulted
See your doctor for advice about PEP immediately!
PEP is effective but not 100%, so you should continue to use condoms and other protection with your sexual partners while taking PEP. Protection can both protect you from being exposed to HIV again and reduce your chances of transmitting HIV to others if you become infected while you are still taking PEP.
When should you start PEP?
PEP must be started within 72 hours of the risk. The sooner you start PEP, the better; every hour counts.
It is important to start PEP as soon as possible after exposure to HIV. Research has shown that PEP has little or no effect in preventing HIV infection if it is started later than 72 hours after exposure to HIV.
PEP is effective when taken well for 28 days.
Does PEP have side effects?
Although safe, PEP can cause side effects such as nausea, dizziness, fatigue, etc. in some people. Most of these side effects can be self-limited and do not seriously affect your health. You can consult your doctor about newly released PEP drugs that have fewer side effects but are more effective.
Where to get PEP treatment?
Glink clinic chain provides professional and reliable PEP services. Clinics with expertise in HIV prevention and care will support you more effectively. They have enough knowledge and experience to advise you on safer PEP treatment, manage and reduce side effects, prescribe better drugs, and most importantly, monitor progress after completing a PEP course.
Should you overuse PEP?
PEP should only be used in emergency situations.
For example, PEP is not a good choice for people who are at risk of HIV exposure on a regular basis – such as having sex without a condom with an HIV-positive partner on a regular basis. If you are at ongoing risk of HIV, talk to your doctor about pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).
